Nah id definitely call that a mating tactic - nice win though.

It always frustrates me to see how much respect masters used to get given though - if I played that line on the internet against some random 2200 and gave them the chance to snatch my e pawn they would do it every single time now - damn punks got no respect for their elders anymore

Those authors and trainers who advocate activating the King in endings should throw in a word of caution about checking for helpmates.

There may have been a winning plan for White in playing h4 to lock the king side and then marching the King all the way to b4 or c5. If necessary throw in an exchange sacrifice to enable the white square pawns on the queenside to be eaten.

I was disappointed not to get more guesses at my mystery forumite, despite the big hint it was someone who gets clear opening advantages without playing modern main lines. Maybe you need to have seen a lot of reports to know that is unusual.

I'll try and guess Leonard Barden on the basis of that hint - there's a lot of the forum users I've never played so not really familiar with their "styles" to have been worth trying such an impossible task otherwise.

I've only just noticed this and other connected posts, apologies for that.

The game against BH Wood, from round 8 of the 1956 British Championship at Blackpool is not bad, but I had zero memory of it even with the prompt of the moves and had to look up my collection on Britbase to find out which game it was. It's a standard attacking theme in the Bc4 Sicilian.

I have in general much stronger memories of games where I blundered than those that I won. I think the machine's assessment of my style is exaggerated, it's too high for risk, decided games and sacrifices while zero for endings is way too harsh. and positional play is also too low.
