Just once, in my experence, did a lower graded player (P Morrey I think) get to be the lone leader with 3/3 - in the 1971 Islington Open. His eventual excellent score was 4/6.

I should defer to Stewart on this one. However, there was an Islington, sometime in the early '70s, in which Dave Patrick upset many of his betters (sic). I believe it was Kurajica who restored the natural (sic) order. Islington was a very strong club in those days, and Dave was a member. I haven't seen him in decades.

A certain David Patrick appeared out of nowhere last season to score 4.5/5 (a 2604 rating) in the Scottish National Chess League, mashing up IM Andy Muir and FM Phil Giulian in the process. Sounds like it could be the same person?!

It was long ago, but if it helps, I'm a little younger than Dave. As I recall he was on something like 4½/5 before meeting his nemesis at the Islington Congress. He used to play Keres's Defence in the Closed Lopez, a variation condemned by Fischer in his famous book.

I can believe he would manage a few upsets.

Dave will remember me, but probably only slightly.

I expect John Saunders or Stewart know more than I do. They may be able to correct any errors in my recollection.

Muheim appears on the FIDE rating list as French, and his ECF club on the sheet of paper I have from the U16 is apparently "France". He has a grade though, and has played 20 graded games, 18 of which were in the last season. Presumably he fulfils the 12-month residence criterion.

There's an interesting situation in the Under 11 section. One player has perfectly legible white copies of the scoresheets - but his yellow copies are covered in what seem like notes, but they're scribbled incoherently over the rest of the scoresheet. No sign of these on the white copy. A bit of a mystery - which hopefully we'll get to the bottom of tomorrow.

are you sure that the U-11 wasn't pressing on his sheet with the other end of his pen/equivalent? It would leave a mark on the lower sheet without leaving one on the upper sheet
