I've had a look at this one. It was unfortunate that he got his initial rating scoring 1/9 using iteration in an unsuitable round robin, just about the best way to get an unreliable result. Even so, until the end of last year there was no reason to think he was worth any more than 1600, so this is a remarkable result.

Looking at the results; lost to the two strong players and got something against everybody else; what makes that a good result the 2100-2200 may have played badly to lose to him; at 16 years old beating 2200s isn’t shocking; like Nick said just had a under valued rating

Also when I was 16 many years ago quickly up from 140 ECF to about 170 in two years; maybe a late bloomer

Presumably his opponents are satisfied that it was legitimate.

If you search for the name of the player removed from last year's 4NCL Telford minor tournament, there's evidence on a chessbase site using engine matching. His 120 standard opponents usually manage about 20%, whereas his matching rate is 70% plus. It's still not generally known what was his method, or how the Telford organisers and arbiters detected it.

I noticed many juniors scoring very well in the recent 4ncl Basingstoke congress, U2050 section.

Out of 17 juniors born 2006 or later. 14 gained rating points. The average rating gain of the 17 was 32 points.

Not to mention the 12 year old Middlesex junior from Harrow who beat Mark Hebden. And I reckon he’s underrated at 2282!

Fortune is in the eye of the beholder. I'm sure people organizing norm tournaments in the London area won't think his SGP registration is unfortunate.

Just out of interest I believe the Telford cheat referred to earlier was found to have a smart watch on his wrist and an accomplice relaying turn by turn engine moves to him, which is why he crushed his opponents so easily. Not sure what his punishment ended up being?

I'm not aware that the ECF or FIDE has announced any, but I don't think he has played since.

Smart watches and an accomplice ! You can perhaps see why FIDE bans watches and pens in Olympiads.

I'm fully aware of it - I played him at Kingston recently and he wiped me off the board! (OK until he blundered into a mate in two at the end but a mere technicality!)
