When I first moved to Teesside about five or so years ago, there was a Middlesbrough Congress.

Where'd it go? There doesn't seem to have been one for a while now, or am I not looking in the right place anymore?

There's still a middlesbrough congress - January I believe and a Hartlepool one in May.

Plus a decent rapidplay circuit - try Peterlee on July 14 and 15

Actually the M'Bro Congress formerly held in early July, folded a few years ago,
as did the Redcar Feb one.
the Cleveland Congress at Hartlepool in Jan has i believe taken its place,
Graham Marshall the organiser runs the May Hartlepool event
and also many rapid play's also in Hartlepool.

Thank you, that solves a thing or two. I was rather sad to see it disappear off the map.

I also mourn the passing of Redcar Congress. It has particularly fond memories for me, the stormy sea, the venue - better known for darts than chess, queueing at the chip shop round the corner afetr the friday games...it's also the first place I beat an IM and used to clas hwith my birthday.....

Anyway - things move on... Harrogate at Easter used to be a great event too...

I guess you meant that there was no interest locally in helping to make a go of it.

Seems to me that you are giving the impression on here that entry forms were sent out and that you got no response,
which for the benefit of everyone outside of Cleveland wasn't the case.

if you now reside in our area how come you haven't joined a local club ?
it's not as if we don't need new blood .

also what is this Social correspondence Chess association ?

My nearest club moved into an unfamiliar area of town sometime ago, and I wasn't happy about leaving my poor bicycle outside to be abused by the locals - don't I sound like a snob? I really wasn't happy about my own safety in the area though so I stick to the internet. I would have gone to an all day congress though.

Well, it's correspondence chess, played to slightly more relaxed time rules (Sundays don't count), and we play postal, email and on the internet too. Knockouts, continuous tournaments, ladders, thematics, team play, internationals, we have em.

First things first, my apologies, Ernie if i have gotten hold of the wrong end of the stick, Again!

i expect you are referring to M'bro Chess Club which moved
from the central polytech out to Marton quite a few years ago now,
the only other Club in M'Bro is the Teesside Hungarians (who are not Hungarians at all these day's)
who do play in central M'bro at the Westgarth Social Club,however there are some people who won't park their car there,let alone a cycle.
Personally i have no problem with either venue as i don't drive and i don't cycle.
there might be an alternative Club for you ,if you don't think Thornaby is too far , on at the moment Tuesday Night's we are currently trying to get it off the ground,
it is in a public house though (The Griffin )

also if you want new members for your events maybe i can spread the word.

Sadly Thornaby is too far, but good luck with it.I did wonder about getting something off the ground at the university, I am a part-time student there.
