Some like to have pairing cards at their disposal. One of the bigger points of potential failure is printers, they run out of ink, paper or just sulk. With pairing cards, pairings can be transcribed from the pairing program and published without needing to write them longhand should there be a printer issue.
Indeed, Roger, as I said, belt and braces or fullback in the event of not being able to use the software either at all or partially. One issue might be power failure, for instance, or loss of network connection. Or the inability to share the data, as experienced. Or the use of the software by people for the first time. Other fallback situations are easily conceivable.

Some other situations where pairing cards might be useful would be:
  • transition from manual pairings to automated pairings
  • teaching Swiss pairings
  • writing a guide or book to Swiss pairings or, indeed, Swiss Manager or other pairing software
  • self-education
  • idle curiosity
  • testing the software - does it produce the same output as a test suite
  • testing oneself - are my pairings the same?

I am sure that others can complete the list.

Adam, so I pass them my 15 character installation code (and my user name?), and they can pass themselves off as me? Is that entirely correct? Heinz Herzog is happy with this process?
I would suggest that the reason for not sharing information by email is that any editing of the data causes the two databases being different. That might not be a problem if you hand over responsibility entirely to your colleague and do not wish to make furher updates yourself.

If you both share the same copy of the database, held either on Dropbox or published chess-results.com, it will avoid potential discrepancies in data arising from trying to maintain two separate copies.

The 15 character licence code is unique to each registered user of Swiss Manager. By default, the information on chess-results.com can only be updated by a user making use of the same licence that originally created the tournament. So, if you are unwilling to allow your stand-in controller to make use of you licence that person will need to use their own.

Having spent many years in software development, merging forked development paths is generally a concept that I am familiar with. One needs to understand the sequence of updates and their side-effects, then one can sensibly merge. But the general idea is that I process the entries, then in my absence they pair the tournament, which should lead to minimal merge issues anyway.

My question concerned legality and/or permission from the owner of the intellectual property, rather than willingness.
that person will need to use their own
If they use their own license, can they then write over the top of a chess-results.com tournament that I have created?

This would appear the route to go. Dropbox? So, that is essentially a file share. Placed on a server, downloaded, uploaded when changes made. Not sure why that should not work by email transfer, as Adam R. suggests. It certainly isn't record level sharing or anything of the sort, with record locking issues.

I assume in that case that the following all can work: OneDrive, Google Drive, a file server, a network attached storage, a shared drive?

1. The Swiss Manager licence may be shared by a group of individuals working at the same event. It is not permitted for the shared licence be used at other events that are not controlled by the owner of the original licence.

2. A different licence cannot be used to overwrite chess-results.com, unless the original creator enables that option (which is not recommended for reasons of security and integrity of data).

3. Any cloud or network sharing system will work providing everyone in the group sharing the data has the necessary file access privileges.

Thanks, Michael, that is useful.

So, the sharee is expected to go:
Other > Install > type in license key

Is that true?

However, when I try that I get:
"The program is still installed."

and there is no option to add a new license.

Must one instead prefix this with:
"Remove user ==> Demo version"
to remove the previous license?

Hi Paul,

I frequently change licenses (Chess Scotland, ECF, 4NCL, etc).
Other->Install->Display conditions for use->Accept conditions for use and then paste in the code.

The only problems I have had are when I forget to do this. As a result one Scottish Championship was apparently run by Alex H!!!

I'm puzzled that you have had trouble loading files on different computer. Anytime I've had this problem was down to my stupidity in not looking for it in the right folder.

So, apparently, your experience is different from mine - when I try this there is simply a modal dialogue box with no possibility of doing anything, except dismissing the box.

Any suggestions?

Hi Paul,

On your first screenshot click on the Accept Conditions for Use box and it produces another screen which allows you to enter another code.

Lara Barnes has been running a lot of events in North Wales recently.

Try clicking the other box.

Just a reminder that there is an FAQ for Swiss Manager here

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bX4 ... sp=sharing

and I will try to update it this week!

Good Day

Can someone please share Matthew Carr's guide on Swiss Manager or a link to the same that had been used in context of the Delancey Chess Challenge Megafinals some years ago?

Many Thanks in advance
Satish
