 Hastings Congress (AE/ DE)
The Board noted that the Hastings congress have requested support in raising funds for this
year’s congress. The ECF has already published a request for support in the newsletter and
this will be extended to the web site and social media.
MP recommended that the ECF should provide some direct financial support given the
importance of the Hastings event but that this should be conditional on changes to the
Congress’s committee structure and operation, and the Congress raising funds by other
means as well.
It was agreed that the ECF should offer to provide a £5k donation to the congress for this year
contingent on £5k or more being raised by other means, with the donation also dependent on
the Congress taking actions to:
• implement a streamlined committee structure including a representative from the ECF;
• develop a social media presence;
• increase the level of female participation;
• actively seek new sponsorship arrangements for 2020 and future events.

I know that Hastings happen every year, but at the same time i do agreed with Malcolm comments, about the importance of the event, should the board focus on the british and british Rapidplay events, as hastings is not run as a ecf event??

It would be a shame to lose the Hastings Congress as it is such a huge part of English chess heritage, but £25,000 is a LOT of money, more then most businesses can afford to spare these days.

I would personally have a crack at getting a big bookmaker to sponsor it - the are a few of them that take bets on chess now, so it would not be completely out of the question.

Reading on Facebook that sponsorship has been secured.

A joint press release is being prepared. It should be out before the British Championships.

Didn't someone wince at the picture at the top and ask them to change it?

The ECF website is full of Andrew Walker's flights of fancy in this regard. I tend just to ignore them.

Very well done to whoever the people are who made this happen.

I am, and always will be, open to fresh ideas / images / suggestions, especially directly, which I feel is always more polite than via the forum, which I visit very rarely. Send your images to [email protected] and when a suitable image presents itself, I'll change it :D :D :D :D :D
Good news about the HICC though, eh?

I have been thinking about entering the Masters, but the 14.15 start time on the final day means i cant get home (work next day) till 1.30am.
Why would the final round on a Sunday not start earlier to accommodate players who work?

The last round at Hastings is almost always on the 5th, regardless of what day of the week that was. A senior figure in British chess is on record as saying that tournaments should have the same starting times on every day including the last. That's now been broken at the British Championship Congress, but his influence persists at Hastings.

I suppose being a Sunday, public transport is less frequent than if the tournament ended on a weekday.
