Anyone know what happened on board 45, Zheng - Patrick ?

Black's position is a bit nasty but that is to be expected after 4...Lc5 I suppose.
Something went wrong with the transmission. White won, but in considerably more than 8 moves.

"Whereas I just need to be paired against Howell and win! "

Well, you're halfway there... (unless it changes of course.)

Good luck.

Mate Bagi crushes Hebden, and now a win in his last game (barring an unlikely downfloat to Balaji) would get him a GM norm. (He would only need a draw if he played Howell, but he's not going to play Howell.)
Whereas I just need to be paired against Howell and win! Maybe if I’d managed to win one of the six winning positions that ended in draws along the way...
Good luck Richard

Perhaps a little bit easier than the only previous time I needed to win for a GM norm...

It wins the game quicker. Mark won anyway. Wins for both Nicks and Roger. Richard's game was impressive too.

I hope Richard gets a great result tomorrow.

Enjoy the evening all of you.

Norm Possibilities
The following players, subject to confirmation, could achieve norms if they win today’s game.
Grandmaster Norm
Mate Bagi
Richard Bates
Woman International Master Norm
Svetlana Sucikova

Unfortunately quite a number of players failed to get the required result in round 8!!!!

Edited to correct norm.

"Bremen win the Bundesliga"?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

It's Mickey's role in this that eludes me

Or were unlucky with the round 9 pairing.

I think you mean Woman International Master Norm...

Mickey's role is being the player i needed (and failed) to beat.

Bremen's role is a chessgames.com mystery.

Last time someone needed to beat me in the last round of an event to get a WIM norm, I played the Polugaevsky Sicilian. I suspect today's opening is unlikely to be as wild.

That's not what happened. Patrick's mobile went off, not very loudly but clearly audible to those in the immediate vicinity. They guy next to him on an adjacent board said you better switch that off quick before the arbiter comes around. Patrick then fiddled around his bag underneath the table trying to find it. Unsuccessfully as the phone then went very loud as the person ringing decided to leave a voicemail. Alex McF then approached the table to tell Patrick he had lost. Patrick who is Swedish was trying to say something but I couldn't make out what, perhaps he was trying to apologise but in any event he was asked "to take it outside" by one of the players comments were made that it is unbelievable that this is still happening.
During this incident, little Jerry Zheng, who is only 12 I think, never said a word or seemed aware that he could have claimed the game and looked like he would have just played on. Glad justice was done because if Alex hadn't come over I would have had to tell him myself and I was feeling very uneasy about the prospect of grassing someone up, but there you go.

I heard the original 'ping' but was unable to locate it. That is why I was there so quickly when in went 'ballistic'. I was a considerable distance away initially.

There then followed the usual dilemma of do you remove the person immediately with the noise disturbing everyone on the way out or do you allow him time to switch it off. In this case it was the worst of both worlds as he was unable to find it in his bag quick enough and I had to resort to the latter method.
