Can somebody please talk me through the opening in Matthew Wadsworth-v-Roman Edouard from Rd. 7 (yesterday). It looks like white was quickly on the back foot if not quite 'an early bath'.

1. Nf3 c5 2. b3 d5 3. Bb2 f6 4. c4 d4 5. b4 e5 6. bxc5 Bxc5 7. d3 Nc6 8. g3

Benko Gambit reversed. Compare to 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3. d5 b5 4. f3

White lost a tempo, so in effect took Black by playing b3 and b4, whilst an early development of the c1/c8 Bishop looks suspect as well.

Perhaps compare also game 6 of the 1971 Petrosian Fischer match. 3. Bb2 is considered a mistake by some commentators with 3. e3 recommended.

Although in the game it looks as if Black got way too ambitious (with f5, e4 etc) and should have been in a fair bit of trouble.

Is Bb2 really a mistake? Or have our opinions merely been coloured by Fischer's great performance in game 6 of the Petrosian match?

I don't know enough about these positions to comment.

it was a rather bad Benko reversed even as far as this 1700 player is concerned. I think 2. e4 is a massive improvement.

I agree that f5, e4 etc were ambitious but the type of aggressive moves I play with either colour.

Anyway time to log-in for todays chess and seeing if Richard, Roger and both Nicks and Matthew all win.

What move did Mark Lyell miss in his game with Thomas Thorpe after Whites routine but flawed 11.Sbd2? on board 21, round 8 today ?

It is the kind of move that might be the cause of a hangover.

Mate Bagi crushes Hebden, and now a win in his last game (barring an unlikely downfloat to Balaji) would get him a GM norm. (He would only need a draw if he played Howell, but he's not going to play Howell.)

That's about the worst game I can remember seeing Mark play for a long time. Panchanathan beats Sengupta in a game where Sengupta used a lot of time in the late middle game and then allowed an attractive but rather obvious finish.

Whereas I just need to be paired against Howell and win! Maybe if I’d managed to win one of the six winning positions that ended in draws along the way...

It doesn't actually seem to win anything.
