The only tournament I know of that tests players for alcohol levels is the Crypt Blitz which penalizes players for being sober.

Roger had the distinction of having no draws, so I applaud his fighting spirit (although I imagine he wasn't happy with the losses!)

The answer is that yes, he was, because it's the arbiter's duty to seek medical attention if the player turns out to be seriously ill.

There was a case in India ten years ago.

Being 'drunk' is a subjective description. It is the behaviour of the player which is the issue, and this is already covered in the laws.

As alcohol has a negative effect on performance, I am usually quite happy if my opponent is drinking (though not to the extent of offering to top up their glass!)

Thanks - a worthy winner. He played the tournament of his life. He was way ahead on time and in complete control every time i looked at his games.

One of my favourite games at Hastings is from 2004.

Vassilios won, Raymond Keene did a wonderful write up in The Times about it along with a win by Jonathan Rowson as black against Mark Hebden in the same article.
