Was it the British Chess Championship in 2016 received a massive cash injection from one of these characters. I always wondered if it was some of this pension money perhaps?
It was the 2017 Championship in Llandudno.

Here's a thread about it.

The named sponsor was Capital Developments Waterloo Ltd, which was a Company associated with Gary Quillan.

If it had any involvement with pension liberation, this wasn't known at the time.

Googling for the Company name finds this

CAPITAL DEVELOPMENTS WATERLOO LTD is an dissolved Private Limited Company,

Glenn House is presumably the FM, but I don't see any IM mentioned in that link?
It's Gary Quillan - see https://www.ft.com/content/1f794f0c-20b ... c92e957a96
Heard about his involvement previously, yes - but he wasn't in that link provided.

He’s stuck off now, and can’t be a company director until after 9th October 2031. I think most of his companies dissolved. Isn’t it the general consensus he masterminded the whole thing? Although presumably the Pension Ombudsmen weren’t persuaded to waive their penalties for Simon and Glenn.
I see Gary Quillan though retains his ENG affiliation on the FIDE rating list. Perhaps it should be removed for bringing chess into disrepute.

I don't think so. To quote a distinction made in other contexts, that's a "playing while English" flag rather than a "playing for England" one, and I'm not sure that attaching ethical standards to the former is a good idea.

Full determination by the pensions ombudsman, quite a lengthy and eye opening document. I feel sorry for those investors who were misled and lost their money. According to the determination ('Putting things right' on page 119), Simon has 28 days from the date of the determination (21st September 2023) to pay the money owed (£738,768.60) back into the scheme. Not sure what will happen with that.

Should the word "allegation" now be removed from the title of this thread?

The mods apparently frantically removing all mention of the Simon Williams judgement from the current live Chess24 commentary chat according to Twitter.

I won't even try to understand what has happened (and I'm sure a lot of those throwing their hands up in despair don't either) but Simon is one of the good guys, apparently a silly good guy, (and I am not going to cast the first stone when it comes to being silly) but he is still a good guy. A bit of support would not go amiss.

So where is Chess today? Sexual abuse (on both sides of the pond), Cheating (on and offline) and blue collar crime. It's only a question of time before the first team of the Brixton and Streatham Chess club rob a Post Office.
