Yes that is a cool trick. I found more than I expected to see on RHP. It's not as uncommon as I first thought in OTB games either. I think the tactic should have a name.
A young Carlsen managed to spring it in a 2004 Blitz game.

I meant in a general sense, I have had no contact with him since 2019.Tim Harding wrote: ↑Wed Oct 11, 2023 9:49 amIf you know where Robin Moss is, I hope you are telling Interpol so that he can be arrested...Matt Mackenzie wrote: ↑Tue Oct 10, 2023 8:07 pmWas active in Cumbrian chess a few years ago, and I played him a few times.
Wondered where he had vanished to, and now I know

Had skipped the game to come back another time, when I saw Nick's post. For a few microseconds I thought he was referring to the subject of the thread!Nick Ivell wrote: ↑Wed Oct 11, 2023 10:07 amThe above is one of the nicest swindles I have ever seen. Thanks for posting.

There is a quite widely published game where a young Alberic O'Kelly falls into a similar trap.

At a higher level, see the plausible blunder on move 24 in Gelfand v Adams, 2013:

Thanks Roger, I knew you would get it! I thought the lengthy sentence suggested he had previous. I played him at Hastings in 1984 and I seem to recall he was local then.
And I've managed the 0-0-0 trick also.

Yes, as quoted in Christopher's post on Tuesday.John Upham wrote: ↑Thu Oct 12, 2023 11:38 amMatt Bridgeman wrote: ↑Wed Oct 11, 2023 8:28 pmSimon Rogers’s has spotted a longer article on Moss in the Scottish Sun; https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/1 ... led-fraud/

There have been multiple media postings on this - most a copy of the one on the BBC Website emphasising the "chess player" aspect. We can thank HMRC for this as all the coverage is from a press release they issued on Tuesday which no doubt has been forwarded to the media by their Press Office.

A tangent, I know, but why do reports say he's been "jailed" when they should say "sentenced to jail".

This is the wording in the HMRC press release - artistic licence to make them look good. It is not known from the reports whether the defendant absconded whilst the case was in progress or whether he was charged and bailed to court and simply failed to turn up.Brendan O'Gorman wrote: ↑Thu Oct 12, 2023 3:59 pmA tangent, I know, but why do reports say he's been "jailed" when they should say "sentenced to jail".
