It seems to me that the USA, FIDE and BCF all made progress in the number of players attracted to their activities when rating/grading was introduced.
I believe that, when the ECF goes for monthly figures, it will popularise competitive chess somewhat. Many ECF officers seem now to agree.

I remember Reg Thimann well. I went to the Sunderland and Rhyl British Championships with him (in my case U14 and U18). His father was a charismatic man who taught me German - I still speak it with affection because of him. I am a lapsed player, at a much lower standard now than when I was 14 and young Michael Farthing was just beginning.
