General Election 2019
Normally when a General Election is called a thread is started to identify chess players (or indeed ex-chess players) who are standing for office.
Of course there are a number seeking re-election in various constituencies. So in time-honoured fashion, here is the start of the 2019 election thread.

Martin Mitchell, Fylde. Alan Reid, Argyll and Bute. Rachel Reeves, Leeds West. Angela Eagle, Wallasey. Maria Eagle, Garston and Halewood.
All Labour except Reid (LD). Mitchell and Reid are not currently MPs, though Reid has held the seat before, whereas the other three are. I believe only Mitchell is a current player.

Mitchell and Reid can both be described as just below master strength players.
I think the former is the only one on your list currently active - are there any others?

Looking at the previous results of the Fylde constituency, I sense Mitchell will still be available for Spirit of Atticus in the 4NCL when the season kicks off in January. Fylde has been blue since 1918; except between 1950-1983 when Fylde North and Fylde South were both blue, before the two constituencies merged to one again.

Ray Pearson has been an active player very recently, he is standing in West Derby for the Brexit party, and is less evil than his choice of electoral vehicle might suggest.
Re: General Election 2019
Very much "less evil". Ray's a lovely bloke, far nicer than the dismal misogynistic knuckle-dragger Labour has selected for the seatDewi Jones wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2019 6:50 pmRay Pearson....is less evil than his choice of electoral vehicle might suggest

There is an Andrew Muir standing as an Independent in West Dunbartonshire. I assume that is the Scottish IM, and that he will be making better treatment of those with mental health issues a major plank of his platform.
Andy previously stood in a similar constituency at the Holyrood election of 2016 where arguably his intervention allowed Jackie Baillie one of the few Labour successes of the night.

Re: General Election 2019
in the Kingston/Surbiton and Richmond Park constituencies they will have to turn up to Kingstonian's match v AFC Fylde on 30th November. Football focus and all BBC coverage that day is live from Kingstonian. Clash with London Chess Classic but I expect the superhoops/brazil kits will progress to a plum 3rd round draw in JAN 2020.
One of the big issues locally is the rail strike from 2/12 to 31/12 with only 12th a non-strike day which I have booked as annual leave. That the liberals ignored me whilst sitting in the same café as I for 90 minutes but Zak spoke to me for 10 minutes at my train station last time out is one thing.
That I have not seen Mike BASMAN on a list is another - I hope he is ok. It has been a while since I have seen Mike.

Howard Berlin who is the Conservative candidate for Ilford North plays for Ilford Chess Club. I played him once in a league match a few years ago, but no nothing much about him.

Hi Alastair:
"There is an Andrew Muir standing as an Independent in West Dunbartonshire. I assume that is the Scottish IM,"
Correct: He is standing as an independent and is the only candidate that lives in the area.

Re: General Election 2019
I wonder if Jonathan Rowson (who takes a keen interest in political matters) might stand for election one day?
