So we need a member of the House of Lords
No, David only said a Lord, which is in these strange times not the same thing.

I assume you are not referring to a hereditary peer?
Well I can think of one such that I suspect would have been known to David:

Christopher, 3rd Viscount Monckton of Brenchley
Whilst I did indeed meet Chris Monckton while I was at Cambridge, we were not in residence at the same time.

Sorry for the imprecision. As Christopher has said, you need a member of the House of Lords.

I didn't make my original post with the intention of setting a puzzle for Forum members to solve, but I shall now be interested to see who gets it first.

As Christopher has said, you need a member of the House of Lords.
If he had stayed on at Queen's as a graduate, Tony Blair's future crony may have overlapped.

Charles Leslie Falconer, Q.C., P.C., Lord Falconer of Thoroton (Queens’ 1970, Honorary Fellow, Visitor). Barrister and Labour Politician. Created Baron Falconer of Thoroton, of Thoroton in the County of Nottinghamshire 1997. Minister of State in the Cabinet Office; Minister of Housing, Planning and Regeneration; Lord Chancellor; Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs; Secretary of State for Justice.

Wrong on three counts.

1. It is not Lord Falconer.

2. You are assuming that the person in question is a member of my college. That is a false assumption.

3. You refer to "Queen's" when it should be "Queens'". The passage which you quote has this correct.

I am thinking of approaching Hasbro to produce a David Sedgewick, Queen's College, House of Lords special edition of Guess Who.

Does the person have a moustache?

A minor quibble, David, but you have changed the terms of reference. The original specification stated "a contemporary at Cambridge" not
"a contemporary at Queens ", thus fooling me into considering a Churchillian.

[PS I always thought Queens was Queens' (ie a plural possessive). Is this wrong?]

Not a good start.

I got Queens wrong too, in reply to a post that clarified it. There is a truism that if you have to explain the joke, it probably wasn't funny in the first place. But seriously, if we are not on this forum to troll distinguished arbiters, what are we here for?

It is the only plural college, if wiki is correct.

The others with apostrophes which are named after Christ, King Henry VI, St Catharine , St Edmund and St John are all singular.

Hi Michael,

You were right on both points. A Churchillian would fit the bill. You are correct about the spelling of Queens'.

Roger got the spelling wrong and seemed to think that my mystery Lord had to be a Queensman. It was he whom I was seeking to correct.
