Over this weekend I have had the chance to discuss how strong juniors and professional players are supported in France from someone who knows first hand.

There are at least two streams as follows :

1. The French Federation has appointed Etienne Bacrot to oversee their Excellent Programme.

In the Excellence Programme Etienne has at his disposal at least half a dozen professional, titled players.

Each of these is allocated (by EB) two strong juniors and paid around £1500 to £1700 per student for a year of support.

The tutor works with the student on-line or physically throughout the year doing all the work that you'd expect a coach to including report writing and other assessments.

2. The students club may also allocate a second coach to the same student on a similar financial basis. This is by virtue of the sponsorship.

The two coaches share information about the same student.

Thus a number of pro players may expect to earn around £3000 per annum supporting two students.

Did you ask the only question that really matters? Where do they get their money?

I don't believe it is the only question that really matters although this has been the consistent English approach over the years.

Both the Federation and the clubs have sponsorship because they had a plan and a vision and sought funds to make that vision happen.

I am concentrating on why in our education system has taken money out of inner / outer London plus shires to northern metropolitans. Still expecting payment by results.

I am not in agreement with the French system of anything.

I would have if system detailed only benefits the students. Since it benefits the pro players also I selected "General chat".

I can readily believe that.

Their education students are in less debt than ours but demonstrate more often.
Napoleonic laws and ideas on finance are arcane.
Not enough food and housing to go around.

I do not think that pro players should be generally supported and I'm firmly in the parents place on paying for activities.
Sponsorship is not the answer to everything.
Where has the sugar tax 19-20 gone was a question on public health member. nswered by we have not received a sugar tax grant in 19-20.

Sorry, it appears that I only read the first sentence.

So you're suggesting that we might have better luck finding sponsorship if we put together such a plan? Maybe.

Isn't the general French system of sports (and therefore chess) organisation and finance sizably different from the British model, hence making comparisons difficult?

Not to an English student and a French student and or their parents they are not.
chess is not a sport - i think the obesity of many chess players plus sedentary nature show that it is not.

About time that we ban the French defence too.

How can anyone sensibly disagree with the banning of the French defence? Just cut off the temptation to play it at source!
