Edward Winter has declared that Chess Notes will be drastically scaled down in this posting on 15th March: "11763. Chess Notes
Owing to other commitments, it will be necessary for us to curtail the posting of new C.N. items as from the end of March 2020. Thereafter, additions to the main C.N. page and to feature articles will be possible only occasionally."

A pity - I admire the man's erudition and enjoy the occasional waspish comments. I shall re-read the archives with renewed interest.

More bads news...that is best chess site on the net (and his books are excellent.)

If it is a one man show then it's a lot of work and due a rest, but I and other suspect there is a dedicated team running things.
He (they) should get adverts on it's to make some money out of it or make subs only...I'd pay up for that one.

I do expect that EGW is the type to make plans for his stuff to "live on" after him, tbh.

Though given that one of the few things fairly certain about him is that he is now in his mid-60s, one wonders what these "other projects" are.

Chess Notes is the work of Edward Winter, and has been since 1982. The suggestion that there is "a dedicated team running things" is nonsense.

Completely agree. Edward Winter is a single lucid writer and a highly erudite individual. Geoff Chandler's " dedicated team" theory is rubbish.

Thank you for two very quick responses. (!)

Just echoing some thoughts others have had about perhaps a 'Team WInter.'

It's just sometimes he slips into the royal 'we' and the work load is tremendous especially when error hunting in a book.
I use to proof read and edited/indexed for a non chess publishing house so I know the work involved.
(I would take 3 times as long with a chess book as you would have to play out the games even if it's computer vomit.)

It was not meant as a slight, far from it. I guess I liked the idea of a team of chess enthusiasts working well
together with Captain Edward Winter at the helm. So it's a labour of love. Incredible. Chess is lucky we have him.

Hope it's not a health issue, maybe a technical thing. I had to halt The Corner for a month whilst they (the boffins) found more space.

EDIT: The Corner has gone. I asked them (the boffins) to take it down a while back and now it has finally gone.
(actually I never done any of it - it was a team of enthusiasts...)

Actually, Charles Hamilton didn't write all of them but he wrote most. Some stories are stylistically different. Apparently, he cleared off occasionally without warning, so somebody else wrote fillers which were never as good.

Edward Winter's style is pretty consistent.

Evidently being scaled back doesn't mean stopping completely, the first Chess Notes of this month have appeared taking the total to 11800.

(something I have meant to ask before - does anybody know what CN#1 actually was?)

I never never knew the were archived. All the old links are gone.
Will these drop off into the ether somewhere or will they be there forever.
