As already mentioned by John Swain upthread.

Minor plagiarism is currently being discussed in another thread. Perhaps we should also consider inadvertent cases.
Ah, oops. Also missed the thread on plagiarism. Has the Penguin been to his tricks again?

Nah - you're muddling the Bird thread with the Plagiarism thread.

At chess on the other hand I'm a late resigner, and equally have no objections if my opponent wants to play to mate on those only too rare occasions that I'm on top.
I'd quite like a rule change allowing me to refuse a resignation in circumstances where my opponent has played on for an hour a rook down with no compensation. But I can see some practical difficulties.

I'm pretty sure I can remember a tournament report in a magazine only a few years ago which included one player announcing mate and the player at the next board (these were professionals, not club players) telling them to just play it out.

In general, I think I personally would be petrified of getting it wrong, but I guess that's a lack of confidence some other people don't have, and they're probably all the better for it.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

And I am amazed that you should not think that comment too petty to make.

Perhaps your last 7195 posts on the Forum (or, at least, a great many of them) are the reason! Don't get me wrong - you have a great deal of useful stuff to say and I read most of it with interest but your response to my attempt to be amusing just shows what a great opinion you have of yourself.

I was referring to the thread at viewtopic.php?f=25&t=10716.

Maybe the opinion is neither great, nor of myself.

I don't really understand your response but it hardly matters. There is nothing to be gained by arguing at this difficult time. I shall continue to read your stuff with interest as I said before.

I did once announce mate - it may have been in eight moves (I cannot recall) - but only because my opponent, in a league match, insisted on talking to me, making jokey comments and such like, throughout the game despite my asking him to stop
Was that at Staines?
I don't think so - seem to remember it was upstairs in a pub in central London

No idea, although I do not recall ever having played Albany

My clubmate John Seppings recently informed me that he had announced mate in a Bradford League game, All I could think of as a reply was, 'Ooh, that's a bit nineteenth century!'.

His opponent called the arbiter over and was awarded the game, possibly because stopping the clock was effectively resigning.
A few years ago, in a Rapidplay Tourmament at the London Classic, I moved, pressed the clock, said "mate", and extended my hand. My opponent ignored me and made a legal move.

Not bad for a Category A International Arbiter.

At least I didn't stop the clock!
