Ah yes, the early rook lift. Definitely not advisable when Black has replied 1...d5, but I saw it happen.

This is a league tournament going on in the Canary Islands at the moment so hopefully its some sort of solution for the 4ncl so we don't have to keep going over the never ending arguments about online cheating. Only problem for me is that is, as a person that wears glasses, the masks keep fogging up my glasses, which does somewhat mess with my concentration so I would be very interested in getting the views of the geezers on the far right of the photo.

If you accidentally touch your mask then move a piece, wouldn't you need to sanitize said piece straight away; otherwise it is generally pointless wearing the mask since we know contact transmission his higher than aerosol transmission

More or less yes. Masks aren't (nearly) magic.

Tournament being played in Ikaria, Greece under the new ECU protocols. Spacious hall, no spectators, no unnecessary walks in tournament hall, social distancing, masks and thermo-screening at the entry for all:

The following is a short video on how a little Spanish child made it to his board in the Spanish junior championships https://twitter.com/i/status/1284035517752004608

This chess player from 1951 (Brighton And Hove Chess Tournament For Boys) took precautions at an early stage :

Does the Prime Minister's announcement today give us hope of an early return to some form of OTB chess?

It seems to me that if spectators are allowed to watch snooker matches, there's some possibility. It's indoors and an average snooker session is probably not dissimilar in length to the average length of a game of chess. There'd still be the social distancing requirement though, so 2 boards per game, or very wide tables, would still be needed.

Let us assume both players are wearing the correct type of masks (properly) and maybe also wearing medical gloves then is there a need for two boards per game?

The main entry point for corona type viruses is semi-permeable membranes such as the eyes. It might appear crazy but swimming goggles would help.

I did see someone walking around in something similar to these safety goggles recently.

I was a bit surprised about this; the outdoor events are much easier to see as safe, assuming singing/chanting/shouting are banned, than an indoor event

More info on the Biel thread, but seems to be starting well, with little disruption beyond juniors having to stand up to move pieces on the farther ranks.

Looks like the kind of playing conditions in most people's dreams.

I've never had a dream about a room full of chess players. Do you wake up at the end of the playing session and try to put the equipment away?
