It’s simple. Everyone brings their own board (er laptop) and games are played on lichess. At two metre distance.

Substitute Tornelo for Lichess and that has already been suggested by Adam Raoof:

Got it! We can all play on metallic demonstration boards, using poles to shift the pieces. Someone must have stored them safely somewhere in around the 1990s.
This is a possible solution from the Netherlands though the clock position will suit the taller players.

Perhaps it is time for Kriegspiel tournaments. It's less hazardous facing away from each other.

From the Spanish Chess Federation. Junior tournament in Valencia yesterday, should the children be wearing gloves though?

I'd be more concerned about them playing the stodgy Four Knights

"I'd be more concerned about them playing the stodgy Four Knights"

It's tantalising though - is white playing d3 or d4, or even saying j'adoube and playing something else?

Almost certainly not
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Rather better, I feel, than knights perched on a3 and h3, as used to happen in my 1970s school league.

The good old 1h4 2Rh3/1a4 2Ra3 standby certainly wasn't unknown in mine
