swapping a queen for 3 minor pieces.
Not managed one of these but finally won a game with the pieces.

Very nice.

Re: swapping a queen for 3 minor pieces.
As long as the position isn't too open I find three pieces tend to get the better of the Queen in the instances I have had them. - in fact there are even cases of just two pieces for a queen being enough to her the job done
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

Rook and a minor piece is almost equal too.

Don't want to be a wet blanket about it, but the classic rejoinder "it depends on the position" very much applies there.
(indeed, its not that uncommon for a Q to prove stronger than a R and two minor pieces in "unbalanced" situations)

on an open board with lots of checks the Queen has a party.
Closed the Queen doesn't have a good time.

Lovely game to play as Black. Nice wrap up.
I played the 5.Qe2 line v the Pirc (pretty sure it was on rec from Ray Keene and George Botterill)
given up the Queen for 3 minor bits quite a few times with some smashing games as White.

Engines say that Pirc line is roughly equal, but White seems to have a big plus in practice - their position is so much easier for humans to play.

Re: swapping a queen for 3 minor pieces.
Hi Matt,
I am so glad there no engines when I was starting out else I would never have gone near the Latvian Gambit.
I had been playing it for about 3 years with great success then one day I got a book on it. Mistake!
The lines I had been playing were dodgy (bust) but nobody had found the refutations OTB.
I switched to playing the Pirc had few disasters at first then one day I realised I was in the wrong mind set.
It's not the Pirc Defence - It's the Pirc Attack - never looked back after that.
Back on track - probably my best win with 5.Qe2.
Me - A. White, Club Championship, Edinburgh 1980

Looks like you were trying to find a way to trap the queen, but it's just got too many flight squares for that to work.
(You could have immediately won material with 16...Nd3+.)

Lovely game. Can't make out all the continuations after 13.Nf4 and 14.Bd5, I assume those additional sacrifices (not accepted by your opponent) are sound? (The final combination, starting with 19.Rxd7 is nice.)Geoff Chandler wrote: ↑Wed Jun 09, 2021 8:16 pmBack on track - probably my best win with 5.Qe2.

Re: swapping a queen for 3 minor pieces.
Hi Chris,
13...dxc4 then it looks like I was going to go 14.Ne4 with Nd6+ or Bg5 and Nf6+ coming.
The game made BCM and I recall I added some analysis around about here.
Of course not computer checked and possibly one of my infamous fantasy trips where
I use to say (in fact still do) it may not be sound but it's OTB human v human plausible.
13.Nf4 was not a bluff it just looks like after dxc4 a terrific position for me. Alastair seemed to agree as he never took it.
Hi Kevin,
I thought your 16...h5 idea was a pawn sac. 17. Bxh5 Be7 which leads to even more awkward positions for White.
Jack's spot 16...Nd3+ is a very good find.
(of course I saw that as well but I did not want say so as I wanted to allow someone else a chance to see it )
