I'm happy with the post thank you, although it may be in the wrong thread. It allows the person on the ignored list to know they are being ignored giong forward. I reported the post by Tim Spanton in the hybrid chess thread suggesting similarities between the attitude of posters in this place in respect of COVID-19 with the extreme behaviour of Howard Hughes. This was in my view unnecessarily dismissive of genuine concerns and moreover in referencing Howard Hughes treated the mental health issues of those in this place and the wider community in a pejorative manner. It is not much of an advance on the Bonkers Bruno headline used in the Sun when the boxer Frank Bruno was committed to hospital. Tim then suggested in what he presumably thinks is banter that my use of initials in my log in was an attempt to avoid the virus. I did not report that, but given Tim's other posts of late on other issues I have concluded there is nothing worth seeing in his posts. Carl has a difficult job keeping this forum on track, but I think he is wrong in this instance. I'm no longer sure this is the place for me.

English and Welsh entrants at Prague:

If I've edited correctly

Open A
38 FM Wiley Tom E 401765 ENG 2150 EUROPCHESS
45 CM Bullen Alex 1801627 WLS 2116 4NCL WEST IS BEST

Open B
29 Salussolia Louis 487015 ENG 1545

The player in the B section is a youngster from Barnet Knights who played last year with a respectable result.

Yep, those were the three I spotted - two already higher-rated than me and another who probably soon will be

If someone chooses not to read what are usually interesting posts that's their loss.
That's a view. Others are available.

Well, yes. The whole point of a forum is that people will disagree with you. Why run away and hide?

Perhaps it is because the posters being blocked are people with no real interest in debate. There are several examples of posters just playing games. There are plenty of posters I disagree with who I have not blocked.

There is disagreement, which is absolutely fine and indeed good. There are also posts like "get a life" which contribute little in that regard.

I don't think those who block others are hiding from debate either. The internet can be an exhausting place to conduct debate and sometimes it is simply necessary to manage the process to save energy. If you have evidence to suggest engaging with another poster is simply a waste of time, then blocking them is one acceptable method of ignoring them and saving energy. Some people get this, others don't. But it might be better to consider why the specific poster has provoked this reaction, rather than concentrate on the merits of blocking or otherwise. I'd very much like to see more people such as Jacob Ward join this forum and broaden the demographic, but it won't happen if we are neglectful of how we build the community.

A closed mind is best enjoyed if others' thoughts can be avoided

Although, Tim, the post to which Jonathan (quite rightly, in my view) took exception appealed neither to an open mind nor a closed one: it was simply a provocation, a deliberate attempt to give offence.

As long as that is always wrong...

Well, the the term is trolling, it's understood to be destructive behaviour online and it's not conducive to the flow or discussion of ideas.

Whatever you call it, is it always wrong?

You'll have to give me a steer on that, since "is X always wrong?" could be applied to almost any given X.
