Some more events have just been announced which I will gradually post in the Congress Diary category.
Also it has just been reported that Telepost Chess Club in Shropshire is hosting a Christmas Rapidplay Tournament on the evening of 5th December.
£5 entry fee with cash prizes.

Great night at Holmfirth tonight with 7 juniors playing, alongside parents and coaches. A match between Holmfirth and Honley followed with 14 players, plus spectators. Best wishes to those juniors playing in York at the weekend at the Yorkshire Junior Chess event. Things are coming back stronger.

2-3 days doubling time with the current reduced rates of mixing, my goodness.

Plans B and then quite likely C appear likely, unless it is really has turned incredibly mild.

The rumour according to the BBC is that further restrictions are coming down the pipe today.

All of the evidence so far is that you get the sniffles for a few days and emerge with a load of natural antibodies. That is the way Nature has handled these thing for millions of years and it's good enough for me.

The sooner this becomes the dominant variant, the better.

Thus chicken pox, covid, diphtheria, flu, gout, hiv, measles, pneumonia, polio, scarlet fever, shingles, syphilis, tb, tetanus, whooping cough. yellow fever and others I have no doubt forgotten; should all have been allowed to follow their normal course?
That doctor, who was laughed at for suggesting doctors should wash their hands before assisting in child-birth, has had a lot to answer for. But he did commit suicide.

A somewhat sub-optimal time for the government to announce new restrictions, perhaps.

And the scary dooming above about "cases" ignores that the vast majority appear to be much milder than Delta.

Lockdowns are dead forever, and good riddance.

I don’t think January lockdowns can be off the table. I can’t imagine ‘Plan B’ is going to put a huge dent in the momentum of Omicron. You’re probably still two weeks away from really knowing what’s going on in the UK anyway.

There seems to be daily competing positive and negative news. Pfizer today announcing they’ve done an experiment that shows that two jabs plus a booster should give as much protection against serious illness and Omicron as two jabs previously did against the Delta. But the negative side in the UK might be a doubling of case numbers, complacency about following strict rules and the Christmas period arriving.

Yes they are off the table, imagine *this government* trying to implement one now :D

Yes it would take something nasty starting to happen, such as the elderly demographic South Africa doesn’t seem to have but the UK does, really getting ill.

I genuinely don't think it would make any difference, zero credibility is zero credibility. Expect serious social unrest if they do attempt it.

Hard to see how you avoid that with Omicron being this infectuous though. Certainly plan B just isn't going to be nearly enough - that's still only estimated to cut it to a 5-6 day doubling time. Still fast exponential growth :(

You have to imagine that some non trivial restrictions beyond plan B are very likely for Jan/Feb. Locked in houses, likely not. Probably odds against for OTB chess surviving?

But, again - being "infectious" and just giving you similar to a bad cold isn't the most important thing and never was. Deaths and hospitalisations should be the sole criteria for lockdowns, as the original justification (remember that?) was "we cant let the NHS be overwhelmed".
