That can be over stated. 13 years of life expectancy lost/death on average iirc?Ian Thompson wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 1:45 pmIs this to be expected?Tim Spanton wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 1:22 pmThe number of deaths registered in the UK over one week has fallen below the five-year average for the first time since mid-March.
Corona virus prematurely kills some people who wouldn't have lived much longer anyway. You then get fewer deaths in the weeks when those people would have died if they hadn't caught corona virus.

This 13 year figure has been questioned; I believe it has been generalised just using life expectancy, and not taking into account personal situationsMartinCarpenter wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 10:12 amThat can be over stated.

For example; a high % of deaths have occurred in care homes, in this environment the average life expectancy is only 2 years
So you can see how this affects the numbers

In terms of count, the numbers dying each week in the UK of the virus are down to a level comparable to one-off disasters such as a plane crash or major fire.MartinCarpenter wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 10:12 amThat can be over stated. 13 years of life expectancy lost/death on average iirc?
Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
The "count" may be returning to a more normal level.
However, a plane crash or a major fire per week is far from normal for the UK.
Chess life and human life itself will struggle to return to what it was before this virus went viral.

The virus will probably carry off around 0.01% per the working population and, happily, only a miniscule proportion of children. Can it really be the case that human life will be changed more dramatically than it was by the Black Death, the Great Plague or WW2?John McKenna wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 11:18 amChess life and human life itself will struggle to return to what it was before this virus went viral.
If so, the only conclusion is that the human race has made itself more prone to collapse in the face of relatively minor adversity that at any previous time in history.
If you want a picture of the future, imagine a QR code stamped on a human face — forever.
Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
Even as late as the 1930s - never mind the Middle Ages when it took months to journey to Asia or the Restoration when it took months to sail to the Americas - air and sea travel was undertaken by a small minority of people and the world was full of divisions - geographic, economic and social
After WW II the changes the war brought about have resulted in the global integration of all humanity - the divisions were largely swept away and even the last lost tribes have been contacted and dragged into the 21st century, like it or not.
The global technological consumer society that now straddles the world is highly and finely tuned. It is using huge quantities of raw materials and energy to sustain and grow itself for the benefit, great or small, of ever-increasing billions of humans
Therein lies the problem and the adversity - not in the latest coronavirus which is at large. The virus is more of a minor symptom of a much greater ill.
The real plague on the planet is us. There are simply too many of us. And the ecological footprint of human activity is just too big. If all the world continue to aspire to live like the population of the USA there will be major adversities in the not-too-distant future.

Very correct. And totally impractical. Who'd want to undertake all this faff just for a game of chess? And it still doesn't eliminate the risks impacting on key at-risk groups. Good try, mes amis, but no cigar

How much does it cost to buy a device to test temperatures, non-invasively?

exactly - as people come in the door! Given that you would probably warn people not to attend if they feel unwell or if they have a temperature, you would have to turn them away if they fail that test.Mick Norris wrote: ↑Thu Jul 02, 2020 2:44 pmAvoiding the invasively joke, under £30Adam Raoof wrote: ↑Thu Jul 02, 2020 2:30 pmHow much does it cost to buy a device to test temperatures, non-invasively?

That's what my optician did; my daughter and I had to turn up with masks on, knock on the door, then get temperature checked before we could come in
Masks and glasses not a good combination, mine keep steaming up
