Not just possible, likely IMO.

Playing competitive chess is being made impossible

Why would anyone make the effort to organise anything while we are subject to such random whims?

A chess tournament might be under the authorities' radar. Whether that's for good or bad is another matter.

Maximum numbers for an indoor gathering on the other hand could be changed, it would seem, at a moment's notice.

One might have thought the key factor would be the social-distancing space available rather than a maximum number at an event. In other words the size of the venue and the activity that is proposed ought to be major considerations when restrictions are imposed.

The last (morning) round of Bad Woerishofen in March was very nearly cancelled as it contravened new Bavarian state (I think) rules on gatherings, but permission for it to go ahead came through the evening before

Surely you know better than to bring logic into this.

Complaining about arbitrary numbers restrictions is like complaining about arbitrary speed limits. If the resources existed to properly police the restrictions and the measures weren't temporary and improvised, it would be different. But they're not, and it isn't.

If there's an intent to run a new event or restart an event that ha previously been cancelled, there will come a point where the organiser or organising team have to make a go/no go decision. The chance that an arbitrary rule change might scupper things is a no go weighting. That the participants might catch a terrible disease is another one, which even in the absence of Government regulations was causing cancellations back in March.

I think it would be great if those who have criticised not just the government but also the chess community put on an event just to show us how misplaced our sense of caution has been over recent months. I'd make a donation to a charity of their choice if they manage it. But it won't happen.

The Slovaks don't have to travel abroad, they are permitted to play in their own country.
