In terms of crackpot (or not) ideas, I have a variety that I would like to explore in the autumn - I'll probably do a survey of parents who have attended my events so far to gauge interest whether they would be interested in some one-off specials. These include:
Making my 8 player APAs double-round on a 10+5 time control, so 14 (!) games in a day.
Trying them as short standard play, so 7 games over a weekend on a 50+10 time control, 4 on Saturday, 3 on Sunday.
Including adults (obviously not possible right now)

That timetable is also a possible format for a monster Swiss with everyone in the same section.

I just need to check a few things, but I will very likely organise another event on the 26th and 27th (5 rounds of 60+30). Sections to be determined depending on participants.
The twist (and possible good news for everyone here) is that IF the restrictions are lifted on the 21st, I will increase capacity above 32 and open the tournament to adults (I would of course take adult pre-registrations from day 1). And depending on budget, I may even give free entry to "strong" (tbc) adults to entice you all to come back to the board!
I am also momentarily dropping my closed Sheveningen idea, as the junior calendar is quite packed post 21st (UKCC and British qualifiers, 4NCL congress, and various other events like the ECF online Grand Prix).
Joe, I think anything more than 9 or 11 rounds of rapid in a single day becomes an endurance contest at the end.
7 rounds of 50+10 over a week-end is definitely doable (I think it's similar to some sections of the LJCC)

Question to those travelling or planning to travel this summer:
Since most of the world is classified as Amber, am I right in calculating that most destination would involve 15-20 days of quarantine? (5-10 days on arrival, depending on country and 10 on return?) Plus a non negligible amount of PCR tests.

No, that isn't right. Many countries are taking the view that their own populations are well enough protected, so visitors from the UK are welcome without restriction.

Not by any means all countries, however. Germany has banned visitors from the UK altogether, while France has imposed restrictions.

I checked a few countries that organise big tournaments, and it's not rosy: Switzerland and Czech republic do not accept players from the UK (there may be loopholes for those with EU passports), France has a 7 days quarantine.
For a country like France, you need to put aside 17 days of quarantine and 5 tests.

Not my favoured destination for a Summer holiday anyway - most Germans would say the same thing.

Greece can be entered without a covid test or quarantining for those with two vaccinations.
Our Foreign Office states:
Arrivals from the UK must provide either; proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test, undertaken within the 72 hour period before arrival into Greece, or proof of two COVID-19 vaccinations completed at least 14 days before travel. Travellers with proof of either are exempted from the need to self-isolate on arrival to Greece.

I meant to mention that after receiving my first (Moderna) jab a couple of weeks ago, I lost the very next game I played on lichess...
...and then went forty-one without defeat.
Alas, as with Awakenings, the effect was purely temporary.

If you are looking to play games of chess at a slower time control (from 1 hr each all games with an increment), then I am experimenting with a few FIDE (

You should ask the ECF or your own Federation (01424 775222) to allocate you a FIDE ID code before thinking about playing. It’s tricky. You’ve still got a rule of 6 indoors including yourself and other household residents. And weddings still have a limit of 30 people, so how does an all-play-all for 60 people work? I don’t think Boris will be lifting anything on Monday.

I see your point, but it is 10 all play alls of 6 people per section, each section has its own area in the hall and there is no mixing, and no spectators. This is organised indoor sport, and social distancing measures are being employed. I don't see any problem with holding an event like this right now, but I would prefer to wait for more people to get vaccinated, so 10 July seems like a good time to restart events.
