Around that time Andrew Law secured a notable win against Tony Miles after sacrificing his rook for 6 pawns, IIRC.

I'm pretty sure there have been countless stalemates in school competitions when players have attempted to make 8 queens
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.
