What to add next?

Post by Carl Hibbard » Wed Sep 30, 2009 10:56 pm

We have reached 17,000 posts - so it's what to add/do next on the forum?

What is missing, What could we do better etc. etc.

Thoughts please :!:
Cheers

Good work Carl!

We need to publicise the forum more widely. Every English chess site should have a link to it.

A recognisable logo would be great : we should emphasize what a useful resource this is to win over the head in sand types.

Yes, we do dissect the actions / inactions of the ECF but this must be seen as a positive facility.

We should heap more praise and maybe less scorn : I am guilty of this more than most but I see opportunities being wasted which angers me.

This forum is one of THE most useful resources for English chess!

I shall e-mail my club site, and the Birmingham/Dudley/Wolverhampton League website, asking that they put a link to this forum on their sites.

I do know that an ATOM feed feature has been added to the (upcoming...) version of this software and that will be welcomed

Thanks, our search engine presence is already pretty good but anything that helps is of course welcomed

How about a bit more user interaction - a weekly vote !!

I think phpbb has that functionality - you could put something on the front page ?

For example :
Who do you think was the greatest Chess Player ?
then a list of maybe 5 players.

What is your favorite opening with the White pieces ?

etc etc.

A little gimmicky - but might be fun ?

The "C4countdown" forum is a similar build to this and regular polls appear on that, a lot of them pretty stupid, but it's worth a try. "Best players of all time" always sparks a heated debate!

You could perhaps add some chess !

This could be chess theory or "here's a game I played/watched last night". You would need facilities to play through games and embed diagrams though.

You are right of course, this has to be the number one option to go for...

Now how to find some free time

It is now here. The spelling mistake has been noted. :)

A link will be placed on my club's site too when the host gets around to updating it next.

I found a thread about how to add diagrams at the chesspub site.

http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/Y ... 99562081/0

Here's an example of a FEN string - Most interfaces to chess database and playing programs should support it as it's an agreed standard like PGN.

5k2/pp4pp/4pp2/1P6/8/P2KP3/5PPb/2B5 w - - id 1-0, Spassky Boris V 2660 - Fischer Robert J 2785 , Reykjavik 1972 Ch World (match) ; pm g3;

I haven't had chance to even look at this if I am honest, however it does need to work in the phpbb software

Chess Viewer Deluxe is an option but I haven't checked it out yet
