Has the ECF Got it In for me?
Not being funny, but I have just organised a rapidplay tournament which went of well. Very enjoyable same again next year. Advertising with the ECF has been a little odd...... I sent off the event to the ECF back in August time to put on the calendar and a player in the event said that the event disappeared off the calendar which meant that it got missed off Ceefax; it then magically reappeared later on. It also meant that another local tournament suddenly sprung up after I had announced the rapidplay (fortunately very different to the rapid) creating a little bit of a clash. Sunday night after the event I sent off the games for grading and was asked for a report by the ECF which I also did. Bizarrely, the same event that clashed with mine has got front page coverage announcing the results and yet mine has no mention! Waste of an email.
So at the AGM I will be voting for people who can do the job.

Can't really comment on the specifics, but Andrew Walker does a very decent job of posting the things I send him onto the ECF Website.

I think it's more the layout of the ECF site rather than anything else - having a seperate calendar and then placing things on the home page which gradually slide down and then out of sight makes it very hard to keep track!benedgell wrote:Can't really comment on the specifics, but Andrew Walker does a very decent job of posting the things I send him onto the ECF Website.

Ben, you sent me the email requesting info on the results I presume you would forward them on.

Apologies if I've been dense and overlooked it, but I can't find an email from you. Is it possible you could re-send it to me? [email protected]

Gavin,
Your Brentwood rapidplay results are on the site, but they've slipped to page 2 already. It really would be good to break up the news into sections (congress results, fixtures, press releases, etc), or at leat to rejig the template to fit more on the page).

Anyone know if Andrew Walker is actually a competitive chess player? Obviously it's a very common name. There are a couple of graded Andrew Walkers, one graded 180. Wouldn't it be great if it was him?

Well after being up dead late completing a load of marking that I had to do as a part time job and then doing the grading stuff, I sort of ran out of time by 12:30am on Monday. Monday night I had a chess match. Last night I completed the results. though I want to publish the crosstables as opposed to just the standings - so will change that. A bit of a computer jig required but ho hum.

I believe the Andrew Walker who is graded at 180ish is, or was, a lecturer at Nottingham University so this is definitely not the same one.

I can't say for certain but I don't believe he is. Whilst I have found him an efficient and helpful person to deal with (anything I send to him he posts it to the ECF site) I get the impression that himself and the other members of the office have little knowledge of chess players names, what they look like etc This is in no way a criticism but is, I think, a fair assessment.isaac wallis wrote:Anyone know if Andrew Walker is actually a competitive chess player? There is nobody in a state of denial about this. The ECF website is by no means adequate. It is intended to correct this in due course. The problems started when the office computers had to be replaced and the web provider was changed.
Andrew Walker is not a competitive graded player. It takes time to become familiar with the 'language' of chess and its reporting. He has done well in difficult circumstances.

But why not give these jobs to chess players with administrative skills? Are they even advertised to chess players? They would do a much better job, for several reasons far to obvious to mention.
