The picture, the hat and the eagle eye of John Saunders.

From the 'British Chess News' site on Face Book, it deserves being repeated - especially the game.

Murray Chandler has been posting some of his interesting chess memorabilia on Face Book but was baffled by this picture...

...as to the when and the where.

Enter master sleuth John Saunders who recognised the hat worn by one of the players in the background.

John nailed it. That is Mark Hebden (the hat wearer ) playing Ian Wells, the Doc is studying the position.
John gave us the event, the place, the round number and the Hebden-Wells game with the double Rook sac on f8!

Mark Hebden - Ian Wells, Round 4, British Championship, Chester (1979).

Much more here: https://www.saund.co.uk/britbase/pgn/1 ... iewer.html

I noticed three future chess authors (as well as Robert Bellin) all won their respective tournaments in the same event.

Nigel Davies: 1979 British Under-21 Championship (11-round Swiss)

Peter Wells: 1979 British Under-16 Championship (11-round Swiss)

Gary Lane: 1979 British Under-14 Championship (11-round Swiss)

So I'm thinking as well as the cheques, they gave out a typewriter, a 'Get Yourself Into Print' book and a dictionary.
