Viz — 5-Page Chess Special

Post by MSoszynski » Sat Sep 25, 2021 9:08 am

The profane and surreal Viz adult comic #309 October 2021 has a 5-Page Chess Special.

Among other things there are tips on how to improve your game: #2 Stay away from the edges, #5 Move twice every turn.

Thanks for the heads up. This could be my first Viz purchase since 1980.

Viz! Recall when that was essential reading in the workplace. Nicked one or two (or three or four) of their ideas
and turned it into a chess situation.

Last one was when they had a Question and Answer session with David Beckham. The trouble was David was
not answering the questions and had nothing to do with it. They just liked the questions. I used Magnus.

What a scoop for Red Hot Pawn. We can ask the current World Chess Champion
questions, hopefully if he reads this and joins Red Hot Pawn he can answer them.

The first question comes from Mrs. B. Knight on the Rim.

Image

What a superb question, if you know Magnus’s email please pass it onto him..

Next we have Mr. W. Rook who is doubled up someplace.

Image

Wow!. I think we would all like to know the answer to this one.
If you see Magnus in the street or on a bus then please ask him.

This next question is from Mr. W Pawn who is in isolation.

..and so it went on ending with; 'Question four comes from Mr. B. Bishop who lives opposite Mr. W. Bishop...'

I've been getting away with this on a fortnightly basis at RHP for 12 years.

Got a copy. (£3.90)

(I've checked Carl, there are no sweary words on the cover.)

Apparently (page 26) you cannot make any naughty anagrams from Chess but you can from Draughts.
(that will keep the boys at the cryptic clue thread busy for a while as well as kicking off my next RHP column.)

I am also going to try find a game where a Bishop (they never had a Bishop so Calvin Phillips volunteered to be one ) took
two pawns and a Rook and had Spassky's King in check. Without a doubt it's made up but it will be great fun looking for one.
(yes I know how sad this sounds but I have finished my Aitken task and am looking for something to do and I might unearth something good.)

Visited a branch of William Henry Smith and made a purchase.

I found it to be really rather amusing so that probably means you will not.

Not to be recommended for serious ECF Council members.

I almost forgot to mention...

Not directly (as far as I know) connected with the chess pages is Roger's Profanisaurus and many other old favourites from the 1980s. :D

For those who bought this, is the teaser on the front cover about "chess-mad laundry worker takes Netflix to cleaners" a not so subtle reference to the Queen's Gambit court case involving Nona Gaprindashvili? Is it like a Private Eye-style spoof piss-take on it? And is there anything else in the 5 pages of 'chess' content that is worth looking up, or just listing in case any one else might be interested? Or is there too much (of little value?) in the 5 pages to really summarise it?

Yes it is.

I am hoping that the internal content will be assessed by Chess Notes so measuring the historical accuracy of the various assertions.

Meanwhile, I hope to persuade the BCN editorial board to conduct a formal review.

The BCN editorial board - isn’t that just you, John?

It's not their first foray into the chess world.

I made the mistake of investing £3.40 to buy a copy. I've just read the chess pages. I can't stress too heavily what a dull unfunny piece of amateurish tosh it is.

At least you have the consolation of paying 50p less than Geoff C ! :)

I'll admit that the chess section was less amusing than the rest of the mag, but still to have a five-page section on chess in a satirical magazine in 2021 says something about the currency of the game. Ten and twenty years ago we were wondering and worrying about the decline of chess once the Fischer generation passed on, weren't we?

I paid £3.90, the cover price. Brendan got a bargain.

I'm very sure that is only new copy of VIZ I have ever bought.
These days I usually pick them up for 20p at junk shops as something
to read and then dump in the Metro box on the bus.

In the 90's when I worked at Scottish Gas there seemed to be a copy on every desk
and the gags were repeated or discussed during smoke breaks. Readers Tips are the best.

Calling it a 'satirical magazine' is a bit flattering. It's a comic that does not take itself seriously.
I too was a wee bit disapointed with the chess bit. I wanted to see a famous game noted up by Roger Mellie.
