How about this in Splott, Cardiff?
Unlike Geoff I wouldn't dream of nicking it even if I had a ladder.

is quite pleasing, especially as if you follow it North you reach the villages of Great Thurlow and Little Thurlow, although the road changes name before then.

"Do you have anyone specific in mind here"

No - but I do wonder at some of the names assigned to roads. I had to explain to one of the locals that "Ben Travers Way", near Burnham was not named after a corrupt councillor. My favourite road name is "Seaside" in Eastbourne. I imagine the naming committee had been there for 5 hours naming roads, and the pubs were about to close, so they went for the obvious choice. Newham has a "Ronnie Lane", named after musician, er, Ronnie Lane.

However, Penrose is much more distinguished.

This is my favourite road name. I used to walk along it on the way from my place of work to London League matches at nearby Cavendish Chess Club.

The best road name of all might be Letsby Avenue, Sheffield, named after the South Yorkshire Police Operations Complex based there.

You won't need a ladder Paul, offer to view the house, you could unscrew the sign by leaning out of the top left window.

I have found a street named after chess players, it is dedicated to all those poor uncredited souls who have lost
a game, often brilliantly, and yet chess history had no details of who they were. The infamous N.N. (not named)

There is a 'No Name Street' in Sandwich, Kent.

There is/was an alleyway in Inner London that once had a very rude name, I won't repeat it here :)

When going from Guildford Chess Club to the Three Pigeons Public House I always proceed via Jeffries Passage.

Things have moved on somewhat in Colchester - now a city. There is going to be a Jonathan Penrose Chess Park in a prominent central city location. No press coverage yet - you heard it here first.

I would be interested to know what Geoff''s source is for that. The only Staunton Street I know of in the environs of London is in Deptford, and was mentioned in the course of Edward Winter's article on Howard Staunton (near the end):

Are there any pizza shops in this street?

Whole selection of weird street names in Inner London, particularly the EC4 district in the 'square mile', amongst which I might single out Bleeding Heart Yard and Frying Pan Alley. But none, as far as I am aware, with any chess connection.

I don't recall seeing one last time I was there but that was some time ago now.

I offer the following chess themed street which has little to do with KIT, David Hasselfhoff, Edward Mulhare but more to do with Thomas Dawson:

Hi John.

I see what happened there. I googled 'how did Staunton Street in London get its name.' and the blurb says; 'It was named after George Thomas Staunton.' I then searched for him and that was that. The problem being despite mentioning 'London' the blurb was talking about a street in the Soho area of Hong Kong! (you get same hit if you google; 'Staunton Street, London + history')

Be interesting to find out when Staunton Street in London was built and named.
