Re: Chesspoint Publicity
look in general chat. I was on the fourth plinth playing chess. Could I get anybody interested? Only keith arkle and mike basman stood up and pushed it. We will get better publicity when we move from tournaments and the minutiae of games to wow factors. Take chances. expect to be ridiculed but carry on. We have to appeal to the young give them a grounding in celebrity chess. By that I mean do what they are intersted in not what we, the adults are. for example fantasy chess leagues with points for wins transfer fees for your fantasy chess team. The kids first need to know the names then they will start following results at the same time learn to play and join in. Charity fund raising. Where are the GMs raising money for Children-in Need? Red Nose? Get in the public eye. but we need to get our lilywhite hands dirty.
Re: Chesspoint Publicity
If I recall the people- on- the- fourth- plinth exhibit (couldn't remember it's official name) was happening around about the time that I started as publicity officer, possibly slightly before or after depending on when you were on there. I'd have certainly done my bit to help had I known.
Agree about the charity fundraising idea. Certainly with Children in Need, something like a public simultaneous, with board fees going to charity, would've been an idea. It does take people who are prepared to try something different and possibly be ridiculed for it, and also have the desire to help chess beyond personal gain. There are people out there who are of such a mind-set, but not enough in my humble opinion.
