Related sports are the ones where commentators can say, 'It's a game of chess out there!'

I may have to take another look at chessboxing based on the hearty recommendations of Gerard and Justin.

Is that the sort of thing that amuses you John, and what does that say about you if it does
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Justin, your rather predictable response partly explains why I find it amusing.

Chess Shove Ha Penny?
The shove ha penny board is divided into 8x8 squares. If you want play 1.e4
you have you shove your halfpenny to the square e4.
(the players are searched after the game in case one of them tries to steal the halfpenny)
The Chess 1500 metres.
Instead of the large screen in the stadium showing the runners it shows a mate in two
to give them something to think and solve whilst they are running around in circles.
The winner must also give the solution to the mate in two after they cross the line.
The Oxford - Cambridge Boat Race and Chess Game.
A motorboat with a large chess demo board at the back of it motors along along
just in front of the Oxford - Cambridge boats. The cox's shout out their moves.

Because you think needless personal provocations are amusing? Well, I think we knew that from previous experience, didn't we?

You've made the mistake of forgetting that the threat is stronger, and infinitely more amusing, than its execution.

Didn't I just read that the new Health Minister is trying to stamp out this sort of thing? "The greengrocer's apostrophe"?
Wrong thread I know, but not as though I am derailing a discussion of momentous consequence.

No, she's bothering herself about the Oxford comma, which is fundamentally a question of style, rather than the apostrophe you refer to, which is a simple error.

I know I have seen recent mention of both, but maybe the other was a Rees-Mogg initiative.

There are instances where it is justifiable to make the meaning of a sentence more clear.
Its those saying that it should always or never be used who are in error IMO.

There's a list of people I would never engage in needless personal provocations against. It includes the forum's most deferential monarchists, Gerald and Justin.
