Re: Origin of a cliche
I cannot recall seeing chess, though something is niggling me, maybe a couple of locals were playing chess in the bar. I'll be taking my chess set (which goes with me everywhere - including Leyton Orient away games, which are my home games - next one is Hartlepool 25th March.) I'll use my Blue (Scotland) and Red (Telephone Box) set.
Local Hero is a film (actually a good film) and the telephone box plays a key part.
It is still a tourist attraction and when it was due to be decommissioned the locals and fans of the film saved it. This action made the BBC News.

I have a film club - so now I am considering whether to suggest that film (we recently showed one involving a Welsh village triumph!). Reading articles about the phone box I did spot a picture of what looks like a chess board. Have a look at the photo in https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland- ... d-48432250? I suspect that a phone call to the landlord of the Pennan Inn could provide a definitive answer?

Hi David,
I went to Pennan and got my chess shot. The is no bus to Pennan, you have to go to New Aberdour and walk from there, it's about 3-4 miles. I stayed overnight in Fraserborough in a B&B

There are a few tables in Rusell Square, erected at the request of local residents. I don't mean that actual design.
