Chess Moves

One may download ChessMoves from https://www.englishchess.org.uk/enewsletter-archives/

with the proviso that the most recent version will be six months old.

I assume that this is done to suggest that receiving CM is a benefit of membership.

Would anyone complain that more recent publishing would de-value their membership?

CM helps to promote the ECF (this is its main purpose I'd suggest) and making it available to all would be a good thing.

I would say that is upbeat and positive and shows the ECF in a good light at at times and is a PR publication for sure.

I've not noticed any controversial content, anything that might seem critical of the ECF or indeed anything that would suggest that English chess could do things in a better way. I presume this modus operandi is implicit in the remit to editors.

Perhaps content more akin to Kingpin (should that august publication be still in production) would provide a little more humour and balance but possibly the editors are not permitted to go down this road.

However, as it stands ChessMoves is a credit to the ECF and long may it continue.

In an earlier incarnation, it was a collection of links to material on the ECF site and elsewhere. This would include this forum, particularly for orbituaries.

I like it but would much prefer the layout to be one long script rather than two columns which makes it harder to read. I did give this feedback to the ECF but was told there are conflicting views on the point. Thank you for taking this on Andrew.

I often miss it because gmail has the annoying habit of tucking it away in an (unknown) mail folder. I only look for it when I see a reference on the ECF website or here to its contents. Obviously this is down to gmail (or my lack of ability to control it). Emails from my two most comment correspondents also end up in Spam so I have trained myself to look in there every day (but that isn't the destination of Chess Moves). Searching finds Chess Moves and when I do get round to read it then I think it is very good.

Preference may be affected by whether it's being read on paper or on a computer screen. Two columns isn't easy to read when you get to the bottom of the left hand column and have to scroll up to continue at the top of the right hand column, and is even worse if you want to look back at the bottom of the left hand column, requiring more scrolling down and up.

I agree that a single column would be an improvement.

From what I've seen it looks excellent - but I'm not on the mailing list. I was advised last May that my email address would be added but it didn't happen so I don't officially receive a copy.

I wonder how many other ECF members don't receive it for this reason.

I've just received, simultaneously, three almost identical emails sent to the same address (the only discernible difference being a definite article in the title of the first email) providing download details for the December edition.

Can I claim a draw by threefold repetition?

You were not alone Richard as I also received three copies of the same email.

I have recycled two of them to reduce my carbon dioxide footprint.

I only noticed this thread after I had reported the triplication to the ECF. I wonder how many similar emails they received.
