williams has gone for the big hack vs Hawkins but will it pay off! look like a good Exciting game thought it would be as i think hawkins fide rating is Criminally low due to not playing many fide events. As hes 231 Ecf. Arkell looks a dead draw but keith will grind at that for a few hours. :)is williams worse here now?

The rapid improvement that Johny Hawkins has made over the last couple of years has been fasinating to watch.Hopefully it will inspire other north east players to get out there and mix it with the big boys.

Why can't Williams just play ...Rd3 (he asks a nation of engine users)? 29...Rd3 30.f3 Rxf3 - looks pretty good because White has to find a way to defend g3 now.

I don't recall Arkell playing the Sicilian before, and can only imagine that he did so today whilst safe in the datebase-suggested knowledge that Webb would play 3 Bb5+.

after all the exchanges on f3 kh2 seems to be holding Jonathan. also looks like Williams missed a win as well move 23. Qxa7 the move Qd7 instead of Qg4 was winning for black it seems. The game back in the melting pot now again.

Some minor errors on the live feed now (load related...) so you might find the "alternate" feed is a little faster?

Ok Ian, but after the exchanges, and White plays Kh2, is it possible to play d3, e4, etc - not as slow as it seems and White cannot move? Why should he be holding that?

Oh I might have answered my own question - I guess that White can play Re1 and be ready to play Qe3 or Re3 as soon as Black plays e5-e4, which blocks the mating threats.

Difficult game. But I'm pleased to learn that Williams at least had a win earlier - it would be extraordinary if White was always holding this!
