How to spot dodgy pairings

I was just wondering, you know how in tournaments you'll get an opponent every now and then that just doesn't feel right at all. Sometimes you might just be unlucky and the wierdness of the Swiss system went against you but there must be instances where it genuinely isn't who you are supposed to be playing and if so 1) how could you verify this was the case and 2) is there anything that can done once the pairings are posted

If they are using Swiss-Manager and you have your own copy, you download the data and run the pairings for yourself. I gather arbiters check each others work in this way from time to time. Failing that, you find someone who knows the pairing rules backwards to check them by hand.
