I think it prob should apply to everyone on their first year some kind of discount esp as SOME people seem to be given it free...Richard Bates wrote: ↑Sun Aug 06, 2023 8:30 pmGrounds for "special treatment" given...

Seriously this is a barrier to entry that will put a lot of people off playing serious OTB chess although many wouldn't say it...
And yes I am tight with my money often but I do want to spend it all by death

So first time juniors and female players. Both initiatives that should be encouraged for the growth of the game.

Blarneying your way out of paying for ECF membership is contemptible behaviour. I would be the first to admit (well, the second, Roger de Coverly would be the first) that ECF membership is an unfair poll tax that goes to an arbitrarily-selected organisation who then misspend it. It is doubly unfair if I benefit, however slightly, from my teammates paying the unfair tax when I'm not willing to pay it myself.

Re: Question on my Mind...
Quick insight into WHY I phoned up ECF...
I've known for years the ECF pay office staff...
So it's important if you're paying for a service to checkout how good their customer service is...
You can also pay for membership fees over phone...
Honestly like I've done plenty of customer service jobs... the woman was pretty good.
I said...
"Do you play chess?"
She said she knew how the pieces moved but that was about it!
Guess it's the saying knowing how to play chess is fine... being good at it... a life wasted

We do sometimes forget what the ECF staff have to put up with.

I have found the ECF staff kind, friendly and extremely helpful. Particularly when I had to pick up league duties during the pandemic and when Yorkshire rejoined. My thanks to them.NickFaulks wrote: ↑Mon Aug 07, 2023 5:50 pmWe do sometimes forget what the ECF staff have to put up with.
As for this section, I suggest we do not continue..
