Edward Winter was pretty brutal about Wenman's offerings, I recall.

The foul stench of silicon is missing, some modern books totally reek of it.

(My thread, my rules. Neil you can have two votes.)
Geoff, you do say the nicest things (though actually this patzer did avail himself of a fair bit of silicon assistance in attempting to understand GM tactics).
If I can have another vote besides Parr-Wheatcroft, it's got to be Alekhine-Yates, the game in which Yates out-combined one of the greatest combinative players of all time.

And about which certain writers invented fables featuring Alekhine "smashing every piece of furniture in his hotel room" afterwards.

I'm struggling to see the list now.

Was there anything by Mestel? If not, there should be!

It looks like Geoff's images were taken directly from the Amazon preview of the book and they have expired. I took a snapshot of them from Amazon, did some OCR and combined them with my links. I'll post this in my next message.
(Three Mestel games: 53, 56 and 65!)

Indeed. As so often Edward Winter puts us on to safer ground, showing that if Alekhine smashed the furniture, it will probably have been after his loss to Spielmann which nearly cost him a share of first prize. Page 75 of the book :D

Was there anything by Mestel? If not, there should be!
Stean-Mestel, Llanelli 1974, where the two of them punched each other to a standstill (Game 53);
van der Sterren-Mestel, World Junior Championship 1975, where he briefly revived the Philidor Counter-Gambit to good effect;
Mestel-Renman Valletta 1980 (Game 65).

The final effort in Speelman's still excellent collection of the best games of 1970-80.

Hi Neil,

That is fine, you are using the computer as a tool (and not the other way round.) it pops up when it is relevant as in Game 7 Zukertort - Count de Kostaki Epoureano 1868. where you point out Fritz finds a win missed by Reinfeld and Wellmuth.
Most of the time, from what I have seen so far, is you are using notes and analysis from players long before computers. A nice blend. I liked warts an all notes from the old days. You played through them looking for your Mr.Thomas moment.

I see the copied index links from my first post have gone. I copied, minus the game links from Jon's gratefully accepted work from there to the my first post.

Mestel v Hodgson, British 1983 was surely memorable, especially given the stakes. (Yes, even though we on this forum had perhaps forgotten it!).

In fact it was the Hodgson game (which I witnessed) I was mainly thinking of.

They don't do openings like that anymore, do they.

Its a genuine mixed bag overall, but that is definitely one way in which our silicon overlords have changed the game for the worse.
