Should the "PP Hare" be "PD Hare"? I played the latter in the Civil Service League twice in 1995. They could obviously be different people.

At the time 6 were MK, 5 each from Bedford and Leighton Buzzard.
I think Paul Hare worked for HMRC (but Paul Habershon would know better).Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2024 9:45 pmShould the "PP Hare" be "PD Hare"? I played the latter in the Civil Service League twice in 1995. They could obviously be different people.

Unfortunately I think he might be the Paul David Hare who was born in Grantham in 1951 and who died in Bedford on the 20th March, 2019.Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2024 9:45 pmShould the "PP Hare" be "PD Hare"? Re: David Glueck (Oxfordshire team 1991-2)
To add to some of the above, I have been told (from various sources) that (the commonality of 'Dave/David' names is coincidental):
(i) The Oxfordshire captain was likely the late Dave Metcalfe (have not confirmed in SCUU Bulletin yet).
(ii) D. Bruce is indeed the David (Dave) Bruce who played for a 4NCL (Oxford?) team.
Does anyone know (in the absence of the late Dave Metcalfe) who would know most about the Oxfordshire team from that time? I have tried to search for details of the chess-playing David Metcalfe, but am having difficulty distinguishing him from some others of the same name (including the different spelling Metcalf). [I presume this David Metcalfe? Though confusingly that is spelt with an 'e' on the end. Not sure now which is the 'correct' spelling... {it is Metcalfe}]

PD Hare is likely.
I played someone of this name in the Marlow Congresses of 1971 and 1973 and then again in a Bourne End v Bedford National Quickplay match in 1996. He was 170/180 ish standard.

The speculation is quite right about Paul D Hare. He was a regular Bedford club member about 25 years ago, but I don't know why he stopped. He lived in a well appointed flat near the station and commuted to London. I think we were aware that he continued to live there but lost touch. I am sorry to hear of his death. As so often with chess members, you can know someone for decades, but very little about their lives away from chess, which is often the only subject of conversation. A distressing case was the Northampton player who lay dead at home for six months until a utility company flagged up his absence of consumption.Jon D'Souza-Eva wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2024 10:57 pmUnfortunately I think he might be the Paul David Hare who was born in Grantham in 1951 and who died in Bedford on the 20th March, 2019.Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2024 9:45 pmShould the "PP Hare" be "PD Hare"? Slightly off topic I saw on Next Door, the website for local communities, that Andrew Brocklehurst was offering chess lessons. I remembered the name from a Hitchin Congress years ago and messaged him. It turned out that we have had a 180 player living in Bedford for 30 years and never seen him. He explained that work and other interests prevent him from joining Bedford Chess Club. I see from the rating list that he is Civil Service, so Kevin T probably knows him.

Chris
I think Dave Metcalfe would have been the captain around that time.
If you want details of the SCCU matches, can I recommend Anthony Fulton’s book The Southern Counties Chess Union - a retrospective
I played for Oxfordshire through most of the 80s and into the 90s so may be able to help in identifying some players

Thank you, Graham. I had seen that Anthony's book had been published, but as Graham Stuart said here, it did fly a bit under the radar. It is really good to see publications like that, with the huge amount of work behind them. Some more here (SCCU site) and here (a Chessable article you have to have a paid subscription to read).

Sorry to hear about Paul Hare - he played for Inland Revenue at the time (before the latest merger of HMCE and IR). He was 190 when I played him.
Andrew Brocklehurst played in several Civil Service Championship finals between mid 90s and 2010, and I played him in most of them. A good player and nice person.

Does Glueck still play? Where is he now?

We covered this in the earlier thread:

Probably not (no FIDE-rated chess at any rate), and still at Dartmouth College.

So England's his home now then. It's a shame we don't see him in the 4NCL.

The grades are from the grading list of the time. It was Milton who was 13 (and probably the youngest there; I was a comparative veteran in my mid 20s.Christopher Kreuzer wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2024 8:19 pmThank you, Jim, for posting your game, and supplying grades where known.
Are you getting those grades from the grading list that was in use at that time, or from a team-sheet that you have? Or maybe another source altogether?
Thank you also for putting in some ages. I had not twigged that you were 13 at the time!
Were you the youngest there? I am trying to get a feel for the ages of the other players, but that will take time. Maybe others will have a better idea.
Sadly, not all the players there are still with us. The late Ray Starkie (1955-2018) would have been 36 or 37 at the time. I should have mentioned this earlier when the decisive game was posted above.
I wonder if a similar look at other country finals from this era will revive other memories. Can anyone think of any particular county final that was particularly memorable? Some of them will have already been heavily reported on at the time (or since), but maybe some have not.
