Has anybody got anything on 1 e4 e5 2 f4 exf4 3 Qe2. Basman alerted me to this donkey's years ago and it featured in the Wall-Berry clash given hereabouts recently ... I am writing about it but find almost no word, certainly not recent or learned, to guide me. Obvious it is a rarity.
Please, where should I be looking?

There are 12 games in MegaBase 2024 the most recent of which was played in 2015 by GM Michal Olszewski (POL)

If you allow for transpositions such as 3. Qe2 d5 4. ed: Be7 then many more appear.

Isn't Basman's 3. Qe2 an attempted improvement on 3. Qf3?

I had a gane in the Kings Gambit this afternoon where the Stockfish evaluation didn't move beyond 0.1 and -0.1 for the whole game. That is apart from Black's second move where it says that 2. .. exf4 should be played with a half pawn advantage to Black. I actually played 2. .. Bc5.

Another thought is that there's a relatively rare line of the French which runs 1. e4 e6 2. Qe2 e5. In this position 3. f4 is a tempo ahead of the Basman line. I found some games where the late Mark Whitehead gave it a try.

The Chesstempo database gives 65 games in this line, including an experiment by Sokolov in 1982 which ended in a 16-move draw.

I remember that facing the Chigorin 2.Qe2 in a quickplay competition some years ago I played 2...d6 essentially to get out of the book, but I suspect that ...e5 followed.

How about 3...b6 as a reply, opening up the choice of two good squares for the bishop?
