Chessplayer typology

"The Chessplayer's Style". This article has been on my chess site for
12 years. I don't think anybody has read it yet. It's time that
somebody did. It's about chessplayer typology. I suggest a method of
determining a player's style according to a model which uses primary
and secondary function. Fischer would be a positional player with
tactics as secondary function (or help function). Spassky would have
tactics as primary function and the positional as secondary. Botvinnik
is a strategist with positional(?) play as secondary function.
Kasparov would be primarily concretistic with tactics as secondary.
The tacticians and the strategists are the visionary and also the
artistic types. The concretists and the positional players belong to
the realistic and the more "scientific" types.

Just followed the link using Firefox 3.6, obvious that the css needs tidying up, as the right hand side of the text column is obscured by the black decorative panel. Also page annoys me by trying to open a pop up window. Need to do some work before I can enjoy your article - and no, I'm not so motivated as to fire up IE 8, IE 7, IE 6, IE5.5, IE5.01 and IE 4 in succession to see which browser the page was designed for. Sorry. Let us know when you have fixed the page or else post it as a downloadable document either here or on your own site.

The page referenced previously is unreadable due to the following tag :

<BODY BACKGROUND="pat2c.jpg" BGCOLOR="#E6E6E6" LEFTMARGIN="100">

The pat2c.jpg image causes an unpleasant black bar to appear. Remove BACKGROUND="pat2c.jpg" and we might have a fighting chance of reading the text.

Hi Mats,

Though that page is perfectly viewable in Firefox 3.5.7 (and in fact the article seemed quite interesting when I glanced through it ) there is indeed a pop-up ad which will put some people off reading it, and also McAfee Site Advisor gives your site a red warning sign, and reports:

1) "In our tests, we found downloads on this site that some people consider adware, spyware or other potentially unwanted programs."
2) that a browser exploit exists in one of the downloads from the site

I think if you looked into it and sorted those things out, more people might visit your site, stay there and look around.

Just tried it with Firefox 3.6 and the nasty black bar is rendered as before.

Try http://hem.passagen.se/melki9/pat2c.jpg which is still tessellated down the page.

The annoying pop-up is

Dear comrades in chess,

This page looks very fine in IE, Opera, and Chrome. Popups are handled automatically by these browsers. For instance, in Chrome there is only a tiny notify window.

Anyway, I have now changed the page to adjust it to Firefox. The download warnings are for my Zillions game programs. Yahoo warns against every single article I've written. This is how they treat people. There is no malware on my site.

Please read the article and say what you think:

Mats,

I can read it now - and will do so. Will report back later!

Thanks,
PM.
