Battle chess and whatever happened to it?
As I teen I remember playing it, here's a review but was it ever so popular? Why? Why not? 1988 review.

I played a quick game on this site:

It works best if you shrink the size of your browser window quite a bit, otherwise the pixelation is hard on the eyes.

I used to have Starwars Chess on the Sega CD which was similar - it was quite cool but the only problem was every time you took a piece an animation of a light sabre battle or something would play out and it made it a long game. Tried it again on emulation recently and it was too much like hard work.

Battle Chess was fun, but the program was quite weak. So I suppose good players wouldn't bother with it much. Having said that, I assume it wasn't produced with good players in mind!
