Info needed please
Has anyone got details of the exact dates of an International tournament held In Teesside June 1972 won by Ben Larsen. Sadly all the past history of events held in the area has not been included on the new Cleveland chess web site. The vast amount of history on the old site has not been transfered over and been lost.
Thank you.
Thank you.

The Great Dane was Bent Larsen rather than Ben Larsen. Technically he was Jørgen Bent Larsen of course.

Re: Info needed please
It is stories like this that are a sobering reminder that chess information online is very transient, and in a lot of cases completely at the mercy of an unpaid volunteer who may for a multitude of reasons simply stop (even this forum and everything it contains would entirely cease to be if Carl deemed it ) so it's always always worth downloading a personal copy of anything you like the look of because the only person you can truly trust in this life is yourself.
Any opinions expressed will not be held to account.

Re: Info needed please
Hi John. Thank you but the current web master has indicated he cannot access the old stuff. I no longer play over the board (sadly early onset Alzhiemers) and not involved in any way with Cleveland chess. I needed the info for a private personal matter. I try to keep up with chess via this forum and the local web site. I know things move on and times change but when I was Chair and president of the local association I put myself out to make sure the important historical stuff was on record for the future. There was a lot of it and very interesting. BTW I know its Bent not Ben. Sorry.

At my age and health issues I no longer trust myself!

A report by Harry Golombek on the Teesside event appeared in B.C.M., June 1972, pages 199 - 205. The dates were as given above.

I'll then attempt to dig out what I can.

Amen to that, Joey. The North Circular Chess League website underwent a change of ownership/editorship a while back. The older version had a good deal of historical material (including a piece I wrote about my own team's involvement). All that seems to have been removed from the current incarnation. Fragments of the former site are still drifting around like discarded fishing nets in the ocean of the web, but you have to know how to locate them. Whenever I discover another one, I immediately do what I can to preserve it by downloading the content - though what happens to it all after I'm no longer on the scene, goodness only knows.Joey Stewart wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2024 1:27 pmIt is stories like this that are a sobering reminder that chess information online is very transient, and in a lot of cases completely at the mercy of an unpaid volunteer who may for a multitude of reasons simply stop (even this forum and everything it contains would entirely cease to be if Carl deemed it ) so it's always always worth downloading a personal copy of anything you like the look of because the only person you can truly trust in this life is yourself.

I think it was www.clevelandchessassociation.org.uk (the current one being www.clevelandchessassociation.co.uk)John Upham wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2024 3:33 pmCan you find out the URL for the old site please from the web master?

https://web.archive.org/web/20240000000 ... ion.org.uk
However I was unable to find an archive on the Wayback Machine of the page containing the history of the association (www.clevelandchessassociation.org.uk/hi ... ssociation).
The nearest was this one from the oldest saved version of the site (2008) which mentions Larsen giving a lecture and a simul in 1973:
https://web.archive.org/web/20080104043 ... /index.htm
But could this be the history page on the new site?

Re: Info needed please
I was there throughout the event. There was originally supposed to be an 11-round Open alongside but due to insufficient support they had two five round tournaments in each week. We played in the mornings and watched the masters in the afternoon.
One of my cherished memories is that during one round, Romanian GM Florin Gheorghiu (on his way back from the loo or getting a coffee I suppose) asked me "How do I stand?" I was dumbfounded and certainly didn't give him any advice.
