Lots of cynicism online about "beating up an effectively retired 50 year old" to achieve this record.

Strangely many of the complainants seem to be Indian though - just a coincidence, I'm sure.

But seriously now, Erdogmus is the real deal and a highly plausible future WC - gives off definite Carlsen vibes in some respects.

Be interesting to see if he follows a similar path to Wei Yi. If memory serves me correctly, when he broke the 2700 barrier, his rating stalled for many years.

As I said, he might turn out better than that. Its certainly going to be interesting.

Nepo has come out with some rather harsh words on X about that match.

What is interesting about this is the number of people who have pointed out that erdogmus family have spend vast amounts of money getting him the opportunities to play big tournaments and matches and that chess is almost becoming a 'pay to win' game where barriers to forward progress are locked behind ever increasing costs and dwindling prize funds more so then talent.

Let's not forget how Gukesh got a last minute place in the 2024 Candidates - one that, of course, he fully justified.
