As some of you may know I am running the marathon for the first time this Sunday. I am doing so to raise money for Sparks, a charity that funds research into paediatric medicine. As part of that I have some minor items of chess memorabilia on ebay (details and links below). If anyone is interested in owning them please feel free to bid generously! More details of the money I am raising and information about Sparks can be found on my Just Giving page:

http://www.justgiving.com/Matthew-Piper

The items being auctioned are:
  • a wooden chess board signed by the players and officials of the 2009 Staunton Memorial Tournament (Korchnoi, Adams, Short, Timman, Sokolov, Reuben etc)
a chess set presented to each of the 8 finalists of the 2005 San Luis FIDE World Championship Tournament in Argentina
signed posters by some of the participants of the London Chess Classic: Kramnik, Adams, Nakamura, Howell
a backgammon set given to particpants in the 2008 FIDE Grand Prix event in Baku.
Here's a link to the signed board:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... :MESELX:IT

The rest of the items can be found by looking at the other items being sold by the same seller. Please ignore all the Top Shop stuff up there - I've borrowed my wife's ebay account for the purposes of this chess auction but failed to stop her clearing out her drawers at the same time!

Many thanks to those who donated these items or helped organise them. Many thanks too to anyone who bids!

Matt

p.s. if you're playing in the May 4NCL I'd be happy to deliver the items by hand so please ignore p&p in that case.

It is absolutely hideous, but I'll make sure you pay more than £8.50!

The signature on c3 must be worth a lot more than £51.

I'm afraid CJ is going to have to go a bit higher than that.

Come on people, I am sure that those posters were designed by some poncy artist, they must be worth a few quid.

It looks like C.J. has taken the lead for the chessboard at a mere £72. That seems like a bit of a bargain. Even worse I have the San Luis board + set! for only £31. We are effectively taking money from sick children - come on we have to be stopped.

I've been outbid again, £51 for the chess set now. Still doesn't really seem enough when there are only 8 of them out there.

There are two signatures of strong players I do not recognise : Sue ? and David ?

Who are these people and why have they added their names?

(my emboldening)

I think the signature on b6 is that of Sue Davey, wife of Clive Davey, the Treasurer of the Staunton Society.

David Howell is on h7. I'm on c3, as flippantly mentioned up thread. In case you're wondering, I was the arbiter.

Does that help?

Will there be any boards without these extra signatures? If I bid I want the item to hold its value rather than plummet.

Sorry - as far as I know there's only one signed board from the event.

If I'd known that not having my signature meant so much to you, I would of course have declined to sign.

I do think, however, John was simply teasing.
As was I. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Thank you for your kind remarks.

Many thanks for all the bids so far - I'm amazed at how generous you all are. It really is much appreciated.

But please don't stop now - it's all for the kids!
