Peter Wells' game is fun. It looks like he should have a forced win (after 18. ... Ne8) but I can't quite find one. Is there anything there?

Edit: Ouch! Peter has just played 19.Rc4 and that looks like it does the job - I was trying to get 19.a3 to work, but Rc4 is much better because the white queen can check on a3.

It's a sign of faulty equipment. Gaining 35 minutes would need 70 instantaneous moves. They only played 47 moves.
No it isn't.

The time control is 100/40 + 50/20 + 15, with 30s per move.

By move 47, Jack had the 50 minutes for the second time control added to his time.
OK, that did occur to me, but I thought the extra time was only added when one clock reached 0:00, which I thought could not have happened.
In this time mode the clocks are used to count the moves as time is added for each move, and as such it will add the extra 'bulk' time increment when the appropriate number of moves have been made.

In a normal guillotine mode without time added per move then the extra time is added as soon as a clock reaches 0:00 - leaving it to the players/arbiters to count the moves.

In 47 moves Jack had available a maximum of 173.5 mins (100+50+47/2). He had 135 left. He therefore used approx 38.5 mins - so he can now catch up with his bulletin work!

Ben,

I know your some sort of raving Likudnik, Tea Party Republican Kipper, but humour me just a second. Why are Guardian reader going to hell? What if they read the Barclaygraph as well the Grudgeon?

Quizzically,
Paul

I just dislike Guardian readers, like every sunday they all march through reading town centre and burn Israel flags and source the Guardian when shouting through a bloody microphone. I personally hate the newspaper and people who support it.

You gotta be kidding! Alliance and peaceful non-sectarian politics. Sitting in circles making daisy chains for me, I'm afraid...
