according to me they're still waiting for white's 9th move - but both clocks have lost time?JustinHorton wrote:In Pert-Haydon, hasn't Black fallen into a well-known trap because White has 9.c5?

I'm just trying to work out what's going on in Dorrington - Dorrington (board 15)
Also, Snape - Mackle had an ... unusual opening

Stephen Gordon has come up with an interesting sacrifice, does Qe2 and c6 get the piece back?

I pointed out Dorrington-Dorrington to Dave Clayton (it's Dorrington-Freeman really). While changing that, he made the discovery that five of the boards aren't responding...Rob Thompson wrote:I'm just trying to work out what's going on in Dorrington - Dorrington (board 15)

There are loads of very interesting games this round. I can't see myself doing any work this afternoon.

Well, then nothing because Pert didn't play it, but my Sadler, The Semi-Slav (Chess Press, 1998) gives 9.c5! Bc7 10.e4 and Black is going to be able to play neither of his breaks.Jon D'Souza-Eva wrote:And then what?JustinHorton wrote:In Pert-Haydon, hasn't Black fallen into a well-known trap because White has 9.c5?

I see what you mean Justin. Black's bishop on c8 is going to really struggle to find a way out in that line.
Great attack by Jack Rudd - even I can see the forced mate if Black plays 21. ... Kxh7

I mean it's not a win-a-piece type trap, but you do end up with a horrid position. I found myself on the wrong end of it in a quickplay game against an IM a few years ago. Might have been the last quickplay I played, come to think of it.
Jack seems to have taken all of five minutes (plus increments) to get to there.

Go Jack.

Yikes - he missed the mate. It was all forced - 21. ... Kxh7 22. Qh5+ Qh6 23. Qxh6 Kxh6 24. Rf3 Rf5 25. Rh3+ Rh5 26. f5+ Kh7 27. Rxh5#Matthew Turner wrote:Go Jack.
He still won a few moves later. Jack looks like a shoo-in for the Championship now.

Yes, a pretty crushing win, could even be a GM norm on the way if he keeps this performance up.
I just got home from work hoping I would get to settle in and watch some of the interesting games but once again Jack has beaten me to it.

Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

I think Aaron might want to go for an early bath, or drink

Yeah, it kind of fell apart surprisingly quickly for a grand master - I expected the game to have been dragged out for several hours yet.
