I read in 'The Spectator' that in the absence of any information about Canterbury 2010 Ray would be centering his attentions on Wade and Speelman.

He then gave a game Speelman-Stean, London 1980. Must be Phillips & Drew.

Meanwhile I am delighted to report that despite scoring next to nothing in two (!) rounds devoted to patron saints, the East Saxons team has succeeded in retaining the Quiz Night Championship.

Sorry, I obviously cannot make it this year (and sorry about my earlier post which was a bit cheeky) but I obviously think that Jonathan Rogers has a point. (Indeed, his county match record a few years ago really was 'legendary').

P.S. Jonathan, the answer to your question is yes.

I've just come back from Canterbury. I just went along for the day to play in the rapidplay. I got Arkelled in round 2. At one stage Keith had 22 minutes on the clock, having started with 20 (10 second increment per move), which shows how much effort he needed to outplay me. In the next round I had my luckiest win for many a season - in a position not dissimilar to this: rn2r1k1/pp3pbp/6p1/3pn2q/6b1/2P1BN2/PP2QPPP/R2B1R1K b - - 0 1, my opponent (Black, to move) missed ... Nxf3; gxf3 Be5! and instead played ... f5, after which he was still better but I managed to find enough tic-tacs to win an ending.

I got back from Canterbury a couple of days back. I was that trainee arbiter wandering around aimlessly :) I was unbeaten in the U140 section (a very good result for me anyway) scoring 3 out of 5. Work out my results. My only win was against David Gilbert who came 3rd in our section thanks to me :) The joys of beating the people that are half decent :D

Shame Graeme. But there's always Sheffield in 2011, which CJ de Mooi is trying to make it the best ever. You could join the likes of Jeremy Clarkson, Peter Stringfellow and the Chuckle Brothers - all great Sheffield legends!! Canterbury has been brilliant - I don't think we'll be waiting 81 years to come back to Kent.

Thanks. These were taken with a Canon Eos 7d. Expensive, but an excellent camera particularly for indoor photography.

He did! Was Reinfeld right all along? Or does the fact that he exchanged his black squared bishop male all the difference?

Is it Ynojosa-Aponte or Ynojosa Aponte?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Thanks. Feel free to use any that you fancy. From the Picassa website, just click on the photo you like then click on the download button and Bob is your mum's or your dad's brother.

Looking at Gordon v Adams - 17. Bxd5 cxd5 18. Rxd5 wins a pawn. I'm assuming Adams realised this when he played 16...Qf6. If I were white, I'd be winning the pawn here and not worried about any potential black compensation. Obviously though, there is some. But I don't see it. So what is black's plan?
