Time rates for Norm Tournaments

Post by Roger de Coverly » Fri Jun 11, 2010 10:15 am

At it stands today, the fastest move rate allowed for Norm tournaments is G/90 with 30 second increments. This typically leads to games of about 4 hours duration and two rounds per day can be scheduled to start at 10.00 am and 3pm with the evening games finishing well before 8 pm. There had been a proposal to outlaw this for Norm events and substitute the time control 40/90 G/30 with 30 second increment from move 1. This could have meant scheduling rounds at 10.00 am and 4 pm with games potentially continuing towards 10.00 pm.

This change has been postponed for 6 months to give the FIDE Congress a chance to make an input.

The Presidential Board decided in Bursa to extend the validity for the official use of the time control 90 minutes with 30 seconds cumulative increment for each move starting from the first move, from July 1st 2010 to 1st January 2011.

I'm pleased about the postponement but wish it could have been announced earlier. We are stuck with 40/90 G/30 with 30 second increment from move 1 for the Uxbridge International as I don't think you can change the time control after advertising it and getting entrants based on it.
